Would you have a 20yo sofa restuffed?

Actually I'm not exactly sure how old it is but it's featured in all DS1's baby photos and he's approaching 21. It could be 25yo.

  • The wooden feet are a bit scuffed but that polishes out when I cba.
  • The style and colour is undoubtedly dated but not terribly so to my middleaged eyes

-- It was good quality/expensive when new, I seem to have £4000 for the suite in my head, which would have been a lot then (it is now!).

  • It's a textured fabric which doesn't show the marks and I have it cleaned every few years
  • The fabric is showing no signs of wear, the arms and the favourite seats look the same as the backs of the cushions.
  • I still like how it looks and it's been part of a lot of memories, a whole lifetime of child rearing.

However, it's stuffed with feathers and the most used cushions are getting a bit thin.

Having them restuffed won't be cheap, probably the price of a cheap sofa and I'm a bit concerned that the sofas will suddenly start showing signs of wear once I've had it done

WWYD?

Had ours done. Cost about £400 for some sort of everlasting foam (I like a hard cushion). Sofas more than 20 years old but still feel new.

Let me know if you want me to dig out the details of the company.

Oh yes please, but I think I want the feathers topping up rather than replacing with foam.

As a rule of thumb, new cushion inners are around £80 to £100 per seat cushion and around £50 - £60 for the backs.

If your sofa is going strong, it's well worth it.

You'd be better off with new feather cushions than restuffing. The safety standards from 20 years ago are very different to those now, and a decent supplier will supply a channel stitched cushion which stops the feathers from shifting around too much.

Ah OK so I can have new feather innards? rather than topping up or replacing with foam? For some reason I hadn't thought of that.

Yes, find a decent local upholsterer and take your cushions in. They'll measure for you, I don't recommend attempting yourself.

I wouldn't dream of it Grin

I had mine completely reupholstered, new springs, filling, new fabric, and it cost the same as a new one. I was happy as the original had been made to fit the space and the upholsterer said it was a very good quality frame and worth renovating. Even if you're just doing the filling, I'd get a local upholsterer rather than anything remote, so they can advise. Mine also suggested ways of getting a more contemporary look.
