Has anyone easel noticed this?
I guess it depends upon where exactly you are in the UK, but I am in the north west and have really started to wonder about this.

Since 2018 it seems summer begins earlier and ends later, there are more and more full sunny days than the old variable rainy ones. The last time I experienced an actual downpour that lasted longer than an hour was in the Lake District, march 2020.

The days up here have been consistently sunny or at least fairly cloudless since march.

Many people will like this, and im sure many of you have experienced more rain than me this past couple of years, but does anyone know if this is a thing now?

Climate change.

LadyCatStark · 15/09/2021 14:16

I dunno if it’s a thing but we’ve been really lucky this year in the north west compared to other areas! It’s finally our turn!

No this is not my experience.

Summer seems to be dull and wet. Spring and Autumn seem to be sunny.

MedusasBadHairDay · 15/09/2021 14:17

If anything it's felt shorter to me. The last few years we seem to have got a brief period of really high temperatures, but mostly grey and wet weather.

mydogisthebest · 15/09/2021 14:19

No, I think the opposite. Our summers are getting worse and worse.

We are lucky if we get a couple of weeks of even fairly warm weather with some sun. Yes we get those awful far too hot muggy days but not that many.

All year round we get loads of rain, grey days and wind.

Pheasantlysurprised · 15/09/2021 14:20

Interesting!
Im an autumn lover, and adore the darker mornings/nights. I have noticed this seems to be getting shorter in the past 3 years. I have this fear that our transitional seasons might eventually become a thing of the past. Hope not!

It has been constantly mild and sunny through the past 3 summer's here with barely any variation. Winter has been milder and shorter to my mind.

I might be moving south soon so we shall see!

I'm in the North East and have felt it's been Autumn since August, bar the odd day here or there. Interestingly, August is regarded as the first month in Autumn in Ireland.

LagneyandCasey · 15/09/2021 14:34

It's been a very dry summer in the south east. Our grass and Hedges are very crispy looking and the water butts have been empty for ages. I can't remember the last proper downpour. Dh made a little wildlife pond last summer that we keep topped up and we get lots of birds flying down for a drink.

iusedtobecool · 15/09/2021 14:34

I’m in Edinburgh and definitely notice this too. I prefer Autumn and Winter so have noticed the warm sunny days with just the occasional rain showers for months now. I joke it’s because the Tattoo this year was cancelled as it’s usually pouring down in August. There haven’t been any really cold days, I’m still wearing sandals in September which is unusual for me.

ShrikeAttack · 15/09/2021 14:36

Well the darker mornings and nights have most certainly been following the pattern they have done for tens of millions of years. They are fixed (I think days may be getting longer by about 2 milliseconds every century), so Autumn is not getting any shorter.

I'm not sure where in the NW you are, I'm in the NW and it pissed down all day only yesterday!

Sprogonthetyne · 15/09/2021 14:38

I agree, for the last 2 weeks the kids have come out of school carrying coats because it's to warm the wear them. From what I remember of been their age (which may not be accurate) it was always coat wearing weather when school started.

stairway · 15/09/2021 14:38

Summer seems to start in March and end in October now. It feels like late summer today and not Autumn yet.

Pheasantlysurprised · 15/09/2021 14:39

Near Lancaster. I think it rained once last week, for about 20 mins with a few thunderclaps. Blazingly sunny again within half an hour of it!

It has been stiflingly hot here all through, as it was last year. I remember the first lockdown and everyone sunning it in their gardens in march.

True, the mornings are darker, but it hasn't felt remotely autumnal here yet. Just read a long forecast for here and it says there will be no rain until late October! Hopefully this is subject to change.

It was pissing it down all day yesterday here in Derbyshire. Come here. Grin

OasisOfFerns · 15/09/2021 15:23

I have just spent an hour laying out in the garden in a bikini. In Scotland. In September Shock. This summer has been long, dry and warm here, although it started later, May and June were cooler than usual. Best summer weather I can remember for ages, we've had so many beach days I really didn't miss going abroad.

PolytheneRam · 15/09/2021 15:28

August was rubbish! As was May!

Yep. It felt distinctly Autumnal!
Purplesky739 · 15/09/2021 15:35

Hmm I think a lot of it is to do with expectation. I’m in south east and most say this has been a terrible summer! But looking at august temps for here compared to Lancaster it’s been a warmer August down here. And it’s been a lovely September so far, but it normally is in my memory. Shorts and t shirts still!
But overall last summer was much much better, we had the paddling pool out in April. Summer did start much later this year.

steppemum · 15/09/2021 15:37

september has always had times when there is lnog warm spells.

I am 54, and remember wearing summer dresses almost to half term. Then weather changes overnight and freezing.

Statistically June and Sept are warmer and drier than July and August.

But I am south central England and we have had a LOT of rain over the summer. Including this week. August was dull and wet.
I was in Yorkshire on holiday in August and it rained every day. Not cold, and not all day, but still. And Peak District in July. rained most days. Hot and sunny in between though.

IfNot · 15/09/2021 15:46

It’s not getting longer, but the old seasons are getting muddled. For the past 3 years we have barely had rain in April.. April!! In fact Easter, which used to be a real mix has been boiling hot, May, which used to be sunny we have had torrential rain. It also now gets much hotter than it used to in Summer, like, leaves on plants going brown, no rain for weeks on end. The Uk used to have a mild climate with showers, sunny spells. Very few droughts or floods. It’s all become more extreme. But it’s always been Autumn, in terms of nature, by mid August. I really miss gentle, showery Spring and I feel like it’s gone forever.

mydogisthebest · 15/09/2021 16:12

I am in the East Midlands. It rained all day yesterday, non stop. It must have been pretty cold as my heating kicked in at 5pm.

Mind you the heating has kicked in quite a few times this year during our supposed summer

DinosApple · 15/09/2021 16:23

I'm in East Anglia and it has been very cloudy and cool this summer. From beginning of June to early September there was one week of sunny warm temperatures. It's also been quite dry. Harvest round here was a month late. A whole month.
I'm guessing climate change is responsible, and this is a taste of things to come.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 15/09/2021 18:02

My son’s birthday is 20 September

It’s always been nice around his birthday, warm and sunny

He’s 19 now, so it’s not a new thing Grin

Yes! We seem to have had really heavy rain for a day or so, then well over a week (if not longer) of sun afterwards. The dry spells definitely feel very long.
