It wasn’t as good as the series but if you love Downton you’ll like it.

I hope there is more of Matthew Goode in the second film. My heart…..

Iimaginethiswillbefun · 16/09/2021 19:56

Matthew Goode is the go to good looking posh Brit now Hugh grant is cracking on a bit.

Maireas · 16/09/2021 19:58

I still can't work out why she didn't end up with Charles Blake. Was all that pig muck in evening dress for nothing?

Matthew Goode is soooo much more rough around the edges than Hugh Grant ever was.

I thought Charles Blake was the best fit for mary. he was attracted to her, but not doolally over her. her matched her intelligence and repected her while not kowtowing to her nonsense.

Even Henry Talbot bows to Mary although they all pretend he does not. She still has the power over him because of her position and the money is hers.

Maireas · 16/09/2021 20:19

@3GreenPullups. I agree. I thought she'd met her match.
Henry Talbot is a bit wet

Robin233 · 16/09/2021 20:29

I love downtown abbey. Just on my second watch if the series- season 2 which I'm about ti put on.
I saw the film at the cinema - my dh took me lol
I thought it was quite tongue in cheek and seemed to played by laughs (mr Moseley ) . But I absolutely Loved it. So beautiful and all my favourite characters.
And the ball, and the music.
Can't wait for the next one - but will they explain lord Grantham's weight loss :)

Maireas · 16/09/2021 20:31

Mr Molesley is such a great character. So funny. I'm looking forward to the next film. Maybe he'll marry Baxter.

@Maireas

Mr Molesley is such a great character. So funny. I'm looking forward to the next film. Maybe he'll marry Baxter.
I like Mr Molesley also. He is viewed slightly foolishly but he has integrity and honour and intelligence. I like how Baxter sees his value and in a very gentle way honours him. It is a very human sort of relationship.

I also think henry Talbot is a bit wet. He is ridiculously good looking but as yet he has no real depth.

I liked it but DD and I love Downton Abbey.

We expected it to be like watching an extra long episode and that's pretty much what it is-

Looking forward to the next one!!

Now I am sounding like a superfan Blush

DA got me through 2020, tbh.

Maireas · 16/09/2021 22:50

I rewatched it all over the summer. Bloomin love it!
Very true about Molesley and Baxter. A kind and gentle relationship. She was nice to Thomas as well.
I loved how the friendship between Violet and Isobel developed. Antagonists, then great friends.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/09/2021 22:51

The film is bilgewater and I'll happily watch the series.

BrilloPaddy · 16/09/2021 22:53

I found the film very schmaltzy and sugar coated to be honest. I'm not sure I'll watch another.

sproutsandparsnips · 16/09/2021 23:03

Have just discovered that DS (14) has watched all the series and the film over the last lockdown and loved it!

Sorka · 16/09/2021 23:54

I enjoyed it. It was like a long episode. It was only 30 minutes longer than the final episode.

Maggie Smith’s character is my favourite. I also love Edith and am glad she’s come into her own.

I don’t like Mary’s new husband. He feels like a holding character until someone more interesting comes along.
