Would you recommend your (smallish) car?

We're planning to buy a second car later this year. DH will be the primary driver, having not driven since he passed his test about 10 years ago. He's tall (6'4") and once he's had a bit of practice, both the kids (7 and 2) will be in the car with him, so we need something with a fair bit of room inside but which is easy to park and doesn't feel like driving a minibus.

Ideally it would be an automatic. Any recommendations? I'm not even sure what my budget ought to be.

I love my 2016 Fiesta its a nippy thing with good brakes.

There will probably be some deals on the Fabia, as it’s being discontinued. The dealers can get hold of them quite readily, which they can’t with other models.

DH is 6'1" and is fine in his Hyundai i20, which is the next size up from the i10, but still a smallish hatchback with an enormous boot!

SpiesRUs · 14/09/2021 17:02

Another vote for a Nissan Leaf - they are amazing cars - because there are no moving parts they need very little maintenance and the fuel savings are incredible. DS is 6'4" and gets in no problem.

I've just bought a new Ford Puma, more through luck than any great decision making but I love it. It's based in the Fiesta (so small) has a bigger boot, more headroom and legroom

TerribleCustomerCervix · 14/09/2021 17:05

VW Polo or, slightly bigger, a Golf.

I’ve had both and they’re fantastic cars. The pupa baby definitely fits in a Golf boot!

I love my Suzuki Ignis. Very efficient round town. Proper sized seats in the back. Decent boot and back seats slide forward to create more space. Loads of headroom for 6’ DH. The seats are high up so easy to get in and out of. The only drawback for me is that it is only a 4 seater. Comfy if you have tall DC in the back though.

DH is 6'4"

We have a BMW X1 as our main car.

And then got a little Toyota Aygo as a nip around second car.

DH actually loves driving the little one (it's a manual and we've not had one for a while) BUT he wouldn't be comfortable on a long journey and no one (not even kids) can comfortably sit behind him as the seat has to go all the way back and pretty much touches the back seats.

So it wouldn't work for us at all as our only car.

If it was only me (5'3) then I recon I'd cope fine with just the little one.

Draculahhh · 14/09/2021 18:05

I have a Toyota Aygo and I actually adore it, road tax is free, insurance is barely £300 and I've only been driving for 3 years.

My 6 foot 8 husband fits in it and actually enjoys driving it, although he says it does get uncomfortable on anything long distance.

The only downside is it really struggles on hills, I live in Yorkshire so it can become a bit annoying when you cant go higher than second gear for the majority of the time.

mrwalkensir · 15/09/2021 12:39

might have a newish I10 automatic for sale sometime btw. Whereabouts in the uk are you?

stripedbananas · 15/09/2021 12:44

Buy a Ford. Ford Focus would probably suit your requirements.

They're spacious inside and lovely to drive.

I have a C Max which fits my 6ft DS nicely and was a huge consideration when buying. Mines automatic and they have brilliant and advanced automatic system. It's spacious enough and higher off the ground which I wanted. It's just a perfect car and I just love the dashboard, very sporty yet spacious.

stripedbananas · 15/09/2021 12:49

My C Max seems small to me compared to my Citroen C4 Picasso. I though I wanted a Nissan quashqai but it's way too small and squashed inside as are VW and Audi. I thought I hated Fords till I sat in my newer C Max and they've since redesigned the interiors a lot since I last bought a Ford Fiesta decades ago which I hated.

Twinkie01 · 15/09/2021 12:49

6'2" DS sits in our lovely mini countryman fine. It's small but feels like a bigger car and is v roomy.

parietal · 15/09/2021 12:51

VW Gold GTE (electric hybrid). DH is 6'3" and fine to drive it, and it is very efficient to run.

parietal · 15/09/2021 12:52

gold = golf

HerculesMulligan · 16/09/2021 12:31

This is all super helpful. I've made a list. Thanks all!

I love my Suzuki Swift (am on number 3!) I'm no where near 6ft3 but they are quite roomy inside. Fantastic value for money and very easy to drive and park.

evilharpy · 16/09/2021 13:08

My husband has a Suzuki Swift. He's only 6' but very long in the leg (once tried to test drive an older MX5 and didn't even make it off the forecourt) and he loves it, has driven it on plenty of long journeys and finds it more comfortable than when he drives my estate. Plenty of room in the back as well and a decent sized boot, and stupidly easy to park. I rather like it myself.
