In absolute agony with my wisdom tooth/gum round it

I have a dentist appointment at 3 but my god I’m in so much pain!! I took some ibropurfen at 9.30 and it’s not really touched it. It’s my top right and it hurts in my cheek/near my ear. It’s like a throbbing burning pain. I don’t know what to do. It really hurts 😩🥺

I had a dental issue recently which is still ongoing and came on here looking for some much needed support. I can sympathise with you as I’ve had the wisdom tooth problem in the past also. I had mine extracted as I really didn’t see why I needed to endure the pain. I hope you get a solution today, so glad your getting seen today, just hang on in there until 3 x

FreeBritnee · 14/09/2021 10:06

Sounds like it needs to come out.

45Degrees · 14/09/2021 10:06

When I was waiting to have my wisdom tooth out I got through it by taking paracetamol every 4 hours, ibuprofen every 4 hours, plus topical clove bud oil on the gum.
Such relief when it was taken out!
You have my sympathies

Sounds awful, glad you've got an appointment today - hang in there! If you feel up to it, maybe try a warm saltwater mouth rinse in case it's the gum that's infected (grim, but works). In terms of painkillers, I found that codeine did the trick for my infected wisdom tooth - if you can speak to the pharmacist today, they'll let you know what can help. Agree with PP, if you can get it removed, do it!!

Jinnybean · 14/09/2021 10:13

I was supposed to have had it removed at the start of the year when it was still in the gum but I chickened out! Majorly regretting it now.

@Jinnybean They will numb you up and you won’t feel a thing, the immediate relief once extracted is absolutely beautiful. Don’t delay it, have it taken out.

3beesinmybonnet · 14/09/2021 10:21

Years ago I had a wisdom tooth coming through which pinched my gum between the teeth further along which caused very painful infection and swelling. I was given antibiotics by an emergency dentist until I could have it taken out.
But the emergency dentist told me for future reference dissolve a spoonful of salt in a cup of water and swill mouthfuls of it round your mouth before spitting it out. Do this every half hour. It creates a salty environment which the infection cannot live in.

ZealAndArdour · 14/09/2021 10:25

It needs to come out, but they probably won’t do it if you’ve got an active infection at the moment.

Try some max strength orajel on the gum flap, it really does help.

CottonSock · 14/09/2021 10:25

Clove oil.
Corsodyl gel.
Get it out!

Jinnybean · 14/09/2021 11:08

Thanks all!

Iv just done the salt wash as warm as I could handle it, as soon as it touched the area the pain was horrific. It’s really really sensitive. I had to drink my cuppa with a straw this morning!

Probably past the stage now but Corsodyl mouthwash when you first feel it niggle I have tried others but it needs to have both chlorhexadine and alcohol in and I don't think the others do. Then clean it really thoroughly with a soft toothbrush - I use a kids toothbrush. I have a partially erupted wisdom tooth that sometimes flares up and this method works. It was reccomend when I saw the emergency dentist once. Mine would definitely need to have my gum cut open to remove and I really don't fancy it.

Jinnybean · 14/09/2021 17:04

Iv been! They said it was the tooth next to my wisdom tooth that has had a filling, they gave my antibiotics and a special tooth paste to use for 2 weeks and then Iv been referred to hospital to have both that one and my wisdom tooth out but can take a year.

OP posts:
Jinnybean · 15/09/2021 09:42

I asked for a copy of the X-ray they took. He couldn’t really figure out what was causing it as the filling hadn’t fell out. He’s given me tooth paste and antibiotics but I have 3 options if they don’t work- have it taken out with the wisdom tooth at hospital under general, have it refilled, or have a root canal. What would you suggest? I said have it out but the waiting list is a year long 😩

Can you afford to go privately?

Jinnybean · 15/09/2021 10:21

No 😩🥺🥺🥺

BungleandGeorge · 15/09/2021 10:32

The filling looks too big to have it refilled without a root canal. I would have thought they could extract the painful tooth at the dentist and then would it provide enough room for the wisdom tooth to come through?

Jinnybean · 15/09/2021 10:33

Apparently because the angle of the wisdom tooth/the nerve it would be a specialist who would need to remove both? X

OP posts:
Wnikat · 15/09/2021 10:36

Irrigate with very hot salt water

BungleandGeorge · 15/09/2021 10:44

I think I’d probably just have them both out. Maybe ask the dentist what the chances of the molar being damaged are when you have the wisdom tooth out. With a large filling/ root canal in it that will be a weaker tooth. Especially if it’s sat next to a dodgy wisdom tooth for a year. There must be something going on if you’re in a lot of pain.
The numbing gel you can get from pharmacies is really good (not bonjela type, it’s kept behind the counter and specifically for toothache)

BrilloPaddy · 15/09/2021 10:57

I've got a root canal in exactly the same back molar. I've had 3 of wisdom teeth removed but they refused to do the 4th in the dentists surgery as I had such awful roots on the 3rd one. They advised root canal as the 1st option as otherwise I'd have to have both teeth removed under GA for safety....... and GA to me is a life or death matter.

I will be honest, it wasn't a nice process and involved 2 x 90 minute sessions and it took around 6 weeks for the tooth to really settle but it's saved the tooth. But the dentist was extremely kind and gentle and offered lots of anaethetic...... it was painless, just uncomfortable.

CarrotSticks23 · 15/09/2021 20:42

Hi OP

To me there is infection around the tip of the root of the painful tooth, and some secondary decay under the filling going into the pulp (nerve). A simple filling won't cut it. You will either need a root canal or an extraction of the problem tooth.

Either one your dentist should be able to provide you. There's no reason to need a GA for the extraction, it can be done at the dentist. The upper wisdom tooth I wouldnt bother with as it sounds like it's not causing you any problems and may right itself once you've had the problem tooth out.

Neither tooth is close to a nerve and I don't see any reason why you would need a GA for removal of either tbh. Is it because you are anxious the dentist suggested it?

Whether you want a root canal or extraction is your choice really, it depends how much you want to save your tooth. Root canal isn't a 100% garuntee but it is a chance to save it.

Elopelo · 15/09/2021 20:52

Hi OP I have the same issue here. Mine is lower left wisdom tooth, saw the dentist yesterday and been prescribed antibiotics for 5 days, if they don’t work then I will be referred to the dental hospital to get it removed. I currently have 12 months free treatment due to having a baby but when I mentioned it to the receptionist she said the earliest I could be seen would be January! So I had no choice but to stay as a private patient as the pain was the worst I’ve experienced! I really hope the antibiotics work because not looking forward to the idea of getting it taken out and the costs involved in that!

I’ve had to stagger paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours, plus the salt rinses and using Corsodyl mouthwash twice a day. I hope me and you both feel some relief soon!!

Nic1701 · 15/09/2021 21:34

I had the same issue with an impacted wisdom tooth which was o the nerve also I had to have specialist removal under GA. I waited 6 months and needed antibiotics every few weeks as it wouldn’t settle had it out 2 years and never had any bother just have to make sure to brush the gum as there is a hole where food could get caught. I would def recommend having it removed the pain is awful your having. Hope you get some relief soon

Deedoo · 25/09/2023 13:41

@Jinnybean what tooth or teeth did you remove in the end

Deedoo · 25/09/2023 14:32

@CarrotSticks23 how can you tell decay from X-ray ? Thank you xx
