Raducanu media focus on money

NiceGerbil · 13/09/2021 22:34

Anyone else noticed this?

BBC site and on the news now huge focus on her going to make loads of dosh.

Lots of focus on why she will be super marketable. Things like young, personable, mixed race...

Saying she's got the world at her feet for sponsorship etc.

While this is true I'm sure. I find it a bit strange that is the big story. And not about her upbringing, the other sports she loves, more analysis of the match, her academic achievements etc.

There seems to be massive media excitement over the future cash which I think is a bit strange and a bit well sort of a strange focus.

Just me or anyone else noticed?

If she had "just" won the US open but was quite plain or average looking, she would be on the back page and maybe a quick mention inside. Because she is very pretty she gets the front page, back page and plenty in between. I wonder if the mention of earning power or money is because they specifically mention the winning cheque at the US open but they dont at other Grand Slams'? I mean you could Google how much they get for winning Wimbledon for example but it's not explicitly stated when they are presented with the trophy.
My husband commented that in the evening standard last night , regarding the US open there were 8 pics of Emma, one of Djokovic (who lost) and none of Daniil Medvedev!! It kind of makes a (nice) change that womens sport is making the headlines, but I felt a bit aggrieved for Medvedev who won his first GS and didnt get a single pic. Obviously he hasnt had the same breakthrough as Emma, and was already "known" within tennis , and is not British, but it's no mean feat to beat Djokovic! The story was more angled that Djokovic didnt win rather than Medvedev beat him.

I think Emma is an amazing talent and comes across as very mature (but fun) and down to earth in the brief interviews I've seen. I reread my post above and thought it sounded a bit bitter- it's not meant to!Blush

I find the way they mention money when handing over the trophy is crass. But maybe because I am old and British. It’s about the sporting achievement for these players. The money is a happy sideline. But the way they mention it is Hmm. As if that is what life is all about. Maybe in New York it is. Who knows.

SunShinesBrightly · 14/09/2021 07:31

Why is the prize money such a big deal?

The ‘prize’ money is split between the team. They all have contracts and get different shares. It’s a job for all of them including the player and the prize fund is part of how they get paid.

GoWalkabout · 14/09/2021 08:05

I think we look differently at young women than we do at young men and there is all kinds of misogyny inbuilt into that. Men are expected to 'do' and women to 'be', so there's something unsettling to the world about a young woman achieving her own aims without that external goal (of being profitable for someone or attractive to someone). Just keep doing your own thing Emma and ignore our shit as much as you can, its outdated.

If you want to know about sport, read the sport section. Yesterday's Times carried six pages on Raducanu's victory, covering every possible angle and including a two page play by play of every set.

The front pages will of course be aimed at the mainstream, 'a star is born' type coverage. She will be stratospheric, it's neither odd nor strange to discuss her future career and the choices that are now available to her.

The all round skills you mention, the other sports, the academic stuff have all been fully discussed too, which is why you know about them.

The money is a happy sideline.
In professional sport it really isn’t a ‘sideline’! Competitive sport is their job. The money they earn (sponsorship, tournament prize funds) is how they get paid!

Agh... would love to have read this. I should have bought the paper. Don’t want to subscribe to read online!

I don’t see anything crass about it. It is incredibly unusual, unprecedented really, for a player to become an ‘overnight success’* in this way. Suddenly having a huge amount of prize money, potential lucrative sponsorship deals etc isn’t the way it normally goes down, certainly not with British players - we’re used to them being in the public eye for years, gradually building profile and expectations. Not coming out of nowhere and winning a grand slam.

*obviously when I say overnight success i don’t mean to diminish the hard work she has put in to get here,

LindaEllen · 14/09/2021 08:42

@AngeloMysterioso

It’s probably only because she’s so young (and pretty). Not many kids her age who get $2.5 mil in one fell swoop.
You make it sound as though she got it just for playing a couple of matches, though. Do you realise how much hard work goes into getting that good? Not just working at her tennis, but making sure her nutrition is up to scratch and exercising regularly in addition to tennis training, WHILE also trying to complete her A Levels?

She has the drive to follow her passion and I admire that. The prize money is absolutely huge, but IMO she deserves it.

Unfashionable · 14/09/2021 11:08

That’s because it’s not a big deal for most of the winners. Most have been playing the circuit for a number of years and slowly accumulating winnings, plus whatever they make in sponsorship. She literally became a millionaire overnight. That’s not how it works for most players.

Yes, that’s why the media are focusing on the money. Another $2.5m is neither here nor there to Serena, but to a teenager who did her A levels in June, it’s a life-changing amount of money.

BlusteryLake · 14/09/2021 11:14

I am not sure what sources you are using OP? There has been tons of coverage of her in general, from all aspects. Loads of analysis from those qualified to comment on her tennis (Andy Murray, Martina Navratilova etc) and loads of articles about her future, marketability etc. Are you only focusing on the latter I wonder?

IrisLilyRose · 14/09/2021 11:16

I said this about news coverage last night: all about marketing, turned it off.

IrisLilyRose · 14/09/2021 11:16

It was main thrust of BBC main bulletin coverage last night.

NiceGerbil · 14/09/2021 16:12

BBC generous segment on 10 o clock news and BBC site yest.

So many it should say BBC coverage that's fair. I didn't see it on c4 news I don't think or sky or aljazeera (I like to watch the news a lot!).

So yes that's a good point. BBC coverage. As our national broadcaster and I'd put money it being very widely watched/ visited I still feel that way about it.
