Star Trek - The Next Generation

This is one of those programmes whose existence I occasionally remember and I end up watching an episode or two. The scripts, stories and acting were, fairly well without exception, first class. I especially liked the often philosophical exchanges between Picard and Data. It's a pity that a bigger role couldn't have been found for Dr Kate Pulaski, brilliantly played by Diana Muldaur. Obviously, there could only be room for one Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise but she was just so convincing. Hard as nails and took no shit from anyone, including Picard.

I'm not a huge fan of the series but it was very good. Must have cost a fortune to produce.

Umm... I LOVED this show. I mean in an unhealthy way loved it. But I have rewatched recently and thought the opposite of you- the acting is awful!!! A PP said gates mcfadden was "a tad wooden" they were all hammy.

Still love it though. Wink I was just a little horrified.

DH and I absolutely loved TNG, think it’s one of the reasons we got it off

SirSamuelVimes · 13/09/2021 23:08

I loved it. Still think it was a great bit of TV.

Loved DS9 (until the last couple of seasons, it was all a bit too religion-woo focused) and Voyager as well.

I never liked Dr Pulaski though!

TNG was definitely my favourite version of Star Trek.

Especially enjoyed 'The Measure of a Man' where Captain Bruce Maddox wants to disassemble Data but can't guarantee he can put him back together again and Picard had to defend Data in court.

Also 'Drumhead' with Jean Simmons and Picard says"The first time any man's freedom is trodden on, we're all damaged"

Always had a not so secret crush on Patrick Stewart.

I still remember watching the ending of part one of "best of both worlds" and screaming at the tv (loooong wait for nexr series in those days and it was the first time they'd done a cliff hanger for end of series), I was with my parents then and they thought I'd been murdered or something. My love of trek confirmed my status as oddball and general freak with everyone, no one to discuss theories with - online not being a thing then, but I wrote pages and pages in my journal about it!

I bought it on DVD for me one Christmas for £25 and watched the lot.

I've some ds9 which I've watched and enjoyed more than when on tv. I've all of voyager though what they did to the Borg was unforgivable. I like my Borg TNG style.

I even have the entire series of Enterprise. Which I've seen. Loved seeing Dean Stockwell in it.

I've not yet watched discovery or Picard. I got the DVDs when they came out, but eye them with suspicion.

I hated, with a passion the remake film of wrath of Khan and made sure everyone knew it. The only forgivable thing was the special edition of the original I was able to get my hands on joint favourite with undiscovered country films. I went to see undiscovered country at the cinema, wasn't allowed to to go along and it cost me a fortune to bribe someone to go with me - I was overjoyed when the blu ray was released of that; one of the best lines in the cinema having been cut from all releases until then.

Becca19962014 · 13/09/2021 23:28

*i should have added there was no confirmation TNG was being renewed after best of both worlds part one either at the time it was released so that could have been it Shock

I got all the magazines and comics to keep up to date Grin

Internet saved me a fortune!

I watched it back in the 90s, I think when it first came out it was super popular and made a lot of money, I enjoyed the stories, especially the 1997 ish movie.

Preferred voyager though - Janeway is my fave captain

Have you seen the original actress for Janeway?

Very inappropriate for the role. Trying to be calm like Picard, but lacking the charisma. Glad they brought Mulgrew in.

Becca19962014 · 14/09/2021 01:02

I liked how Janeway changed through the series.

I'm glad they didn't go with the original portrayal of her, which I assume was the problem with the other actress, though I could of course be wrong in that!

NiceGerbil · 14/09/2021 01:15

I saw an interview with I think it was marina sirtis were she was taking the piss of the sexist stuff.

She said they once had a conversation between troi and crusher take place while they were doing yoga in skin tight outfits for no reason at all. Had them bending over etc.

You've seen first contact the film with the Borg? They were exceptional baddies always, brilliant idea whoever came up with them!

NiceGerbil · 14/09/2021 01:17

I liked voyager as well.
Ds9 was ok.
Enterprise was an unwatchable load of bollocks imo!

And original series was on at 6 when I was a kid and I loved it so much.
Still got a huge soft spot. Massive in fact Grin

RubyGoat · 14/09/2021 01:17

She was their original cast decision for Janeway? When the walls fell...

GreyCarpet · 14/09/2021 02:27

I absolutely loved TNG. Had the biggest crush on Data (and Picard of course). Then I loved DS9 (although the acting was terrible!) and had the biggest crush on Garak. Well and Damar and Gul Dukat. Kinda went off Damar when the Kanar got him.

Oh and then there was Hugh... sigh...

Clearly, I loved it most for the boys 🙈

Sisko was a really weak captain. Picard was awesome.

I watch DS9 from start to finish every couple of years.

In the Pale Moonlight is my favourite episode.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 14/09/2021 11:41

Enterprise was an unwatchable load of bollocks imo!

I completely agree. I couldn't even get past the Bon Jovi style theme tune!

Discovery started well then fell down a massive woke rabbit hole. As with Enterprise, I just didn't actually like any of the characters.

Sisko was a really weak captain

I didn't really notice Sisko until they moved the hair from his head to his face. He suited the bald with a goatee look.
I loved Quark and the other characters.

Jake was also a very weak character, and Cassidy Yates brought nothing to the show.

I'm still bitter about them killing Jadzia though. Poor Worf.

ISaySteadyOn · 14/09/2021 11:53

@GreyCarpet, Data? You too? I thought it was just me Blush. Something about how he says Intriguing.

FlatCheese · 14/09/2021 11:56

I never understood why Data wanted to be human. He was never going to make it. If he'd aimed for being Vulcan instead he'd have been sorted.

I liked Voyager and DS9, although it took me a while to get into DS9. I think there were a lot of good characters in DS9. Incidentally, I don't normally read Star Trek books, but Andrew Robinson (Garak) wrote a book called A Stitch In Time which was all about his character. It's excellent and it really fills in some of the background of his upbringing and life before he got to DS9.

Buttons294749 · 14/09/2021 21:56

Genvieve bujold actually quit as Janeway because she realised it would take too much time away from her young child. She was relatively famous I think back then and Kate mulgrew was under a lot of pressure when she replaced her. If you haven't read Mulgrew's autobiography I highly recommend!

Becca19962014 · 14/09/2021 22:58

@Buttons294749 thanks for that I'll look it up!
