If someone gave you £700000 what would you do with it?

Can't talk about this in real life and it's perfectly possible this won't happen but we are in the running to receive a payout of £700,000 by the end of the year.
I'm trying not to think about it as I don't want to be disappointed but there is also a bit of me that is a little excited. If it comes off the 700k would be the initial pay out followed by a regular annual income afterwards.

It is a life changing amount of money for us in that it will pay off our mortgage, allow us to buy a new car and go on some great holidays.

What would you do if you were given that amount of money?

It would be just enough for us to buy a decent house around here with the sale of our current house.
So probably buy a slightly better house.
Invest 100000 though.
Go to Asia with about 30000. Big tour, Japan, Hong Kong etc Thailand.

And one big trip to Pacific High

I'd put £200k for each of the dc into a savers account for them to buy their first house.

The remaining £100k I'd do an extension for an office so dh can GET OFF MY DINING ROOM TABLE AND LEAVE ME IN PIECE!!!! Grin

whiteroseredrose · 14/09/2021 21:00

Also retire

bigbaggyeyes · 14/09/2021 21:11

I'd retire with my dh early. Myself and my dh have 10 years left to work before retirement, with 700000 would mean we could retire now, same standard of living as now.

expatmigrant · 14/09/2021 21:14

I'd sell my house and move closer in to London

ohfook · 14/09/2021 21:16

Pay off mortgage and do house up.

Book a once in a lifetime holiday for me, kids, dh, my parents and my sister's family.

Keep the rest for when I needed it.

PattyPan · 14/09/2021 21:17

Buy a new house mortgage free and redecorate it to my tastes (new kitchen), travel around South America for a few months and then put the rest in tracker funds

Autumngoldleaf · 14/09/2021 22:08

Patty I'd also do tracker funds and add to dc funds to help them get on property ladder.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/09/2021 22:47

I’d buy 350,000 luck dips on the national lottery

BlueberrySugar · 14/09/2021 22:48

Pay off debt.
Buy a house.
Give some to DS.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 14/09/2021 22:50

Pay off any mortgage / debts.

£2-5k 'fun money' for a treat eg super fancy holiday.

The rest i would put into a second property I rent out.

helpforayounggirl · 14/09/2021 22:50

I live in rural France and run a small cat sanctuary. I'd run a massive one.

CorianderAndCream · 14/09/2021 23:00

Buy a bigger house and go to Hawaii

RowanAlong · 14/09/2021 23:01

Move house, sort cars, gift a bit to siblings, invest the rest and retrain in something interesting and part-time.

Bunnycat101 · 14/09/2021 23:10

I have thought about what I’d do with different windfalls (a lot) which is a bit sad but hey…. At the 700k mark one of us would still need to work, possibly both of us.

  • spend £250k on extension, new kitchen and bathroom
  • invest £200k towards private education for secondary. Undecided whether I’d stump up for last few years of primary
  • earmark £200k for mortgage *50k holidays

Ideally you’d put some in pensions for tax purposes but I’d rather have the benefit of the windfall and then increase pension contributions from salary.

leavesthataregreen · 14/09/2021 23:13

I'd give a big chunk to sister, brother and cousins who could all do with some extra cash right now. And a big chunk to some small charities where I know the money is used on people who need it not on perpetuating the upkeep of the expensive charity offices!
I'd remodel our kitchen and bathroom and all the bedrooms.
I'd hire a gardener and cleaner.
I'd book every holiday I've ever wanted to go on.
And there is a business I've always wanted to start but it requires a big outlay upfront so I've never had the guts. Could do it with that amount of money, though!
