For a long time, I honestly believed money laundering was literally washing money in a washing machine and I wondered why it was so bad Blush

We lived at the top of a steep hill with a road running along the bottom.
My dad told me never to run down the hill because I wouldn’t be able to stop at the bottom.
I think I was about 7 before I realised he meant I could run out into the road, rather than I would be running for the rest of my life. I imagined myself doing everything at top speed!

Burnamer · 13/09/2021 17:16

I believed that she had my best interests at heart.

(Sorry, it’s a light hearted thread I know, as you were)

chesirecat99 · 13/09/2021 17:18

When I was about 4/5, I couldn't understand why our village was up in arms at proposals to cut down the trees at the edge of the common to turn the main road into a dual carriageway.

I thought it would be rather lovely to have a road especially for horses and carriages, although maybe they were worried someone might get hurt by the duels.

@Moonflower12

Why was it called the Cold War? Until about 2 minutes ago I thought it was because Russia was cold...
Because they didn't actually declare on one another USA and Russia but both acted as though they were with moves/countermoves of military forces/assets, espionage and expulsion of diplomats etc. So all the mechanics of 'war' were there without anyone pressing the big red button.

There were several very close tipping points that thankfully went the right way.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 13/09/2021 17:19

@ StopThrowingCitrusFruitFFS - @Moonflower12 is right, it’s “cold” because they didn’t actually engage in proper warfare

WeatherwaxLives · 13/09/2021 17:23

I remember when 'cashback' was first introduced, I thought it was free money, like a discount on what you just bought, and couldn't understand why DM always said 'no'!

Like PP I heard Moira Stewart reporting on guerilla fighters and pictured gorillas.

The image is a train bridge, there's a road bridge next to it which is slightly higher, so you can't really see the tracks if you're on the road bridge. I used to think the train went through the big tube shaped bits!

@StopThrowingCitrusFruitFFS

I also thought unicorns were real for ages, because, frankly, as mythical creatures, a horse with a horn is pretty fucking tame. Clearly Pegasus was a myth - a flying horse? Come on. But a horse with a horn seems pretty plausible to me!
Well quite

What sounds more reasonable?

A four legged creature with a massive long neck or a horse with a horn?!

Yes, that was me who said that it as cold because they didn't really fight (smug Grin). Moonflower was the one previously believed it was because Russia is cold.

(Gotta take the "you were right" comments on here when you can get 'em WinkGrin)

@Itsmemaggie

I used to think that when a baby was born the doctor tied a knot in the umbilical cord and whether you had an innie or outie was a result of how good they were at tying knots!
This isn't true? Even a little bit? Confused
Quick99 · 13/09/2021 17:27

I thought Crystal Palace was the Royal families' football team until I was about 8 😂
I hope this isn't offensive I was a very naive child from a white family so when I watched the film flash gordan and there was a black actor playing an alien that gets killed and has blue coloured blood. I didn't realise that was just part of the film and for years thought that black people really did have blood that was blue 🤨 seriously wtf was I thinking
I though 'several' meant when there was seven of something 😳

Ellee72 · 13/09/2021 17:28

When I saw black and white photos, I thought the world was in black and whiteBlush

I kind of thought this, DM told me she was glad she had me when she did, as a couple of years later they changed the procedure on tying the cord and the babies from then on had outies.

I only found out that wasn't true when I was googling, while pregnant, to see if I could specify in my birth plan the knot to be used so that DC would have an innie. Blush

husbandcallsmepickle · 13/09/2021 17:31

I thought red wine was from purple grapes and white wine was from green grapes.

I thought it was about how it was tied 🤣. I've learnt something new today! Blush

I thought poo was stored your buttocks.

Also wondered how you can sell a car boot.

And thought Auld Lang Syne was actually Old Man's Iron Confused Made sense as a 7 year old...

Thought the belly buttons thing was fact Blush Heading over to Google right now....

BlueberrySugar · 13/09/2021 17:41

Until about a year ago that it's actually not illegal to drive with the back inside light on.

Clawdy · 13/09/2021 17:43

When I was little I thought lightning could get into the house, because my gran used to rush and hide knives and forks from the table if a storm began.

FatAnkles · 13/09/2021 17:46

I thought babies came out of your bottom. I didn't know I had, ahem, more holes.

I also used to believe in God, but we could be here for days discussing the ayes and nays of all that.

MaybeAMoaner · 13/09/2021 17:46

A cold war is a conflict/political hostility without direct military action fought through threats of military action, propaganda, spying etc.
LumpyandBumps · 13/09/2021 17:49

I used to think that the Guide Dog made the decision when to cross the road. Oh dear!

Pheebs2021 · 13/09/2021 17:51

Saving for a rainy day... I could only spend that money on a day when it's raining.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2021 17:51

I though cats eyes in the road each had a little light, and was astounded at the clever way they lit up as you drove towards them and turned off once you'd passed by.
