Biopsy and ultrasound for breast lump

I'm 35 and Last week I found a lump in my breast, my gp referred me to the breast clinic, I have just got back today. The Dr at hospital after examination said it didn't seem malignant and more likely a fibroid from a mild trauma, and it's likely I hadn't remembered it happening. I went for ultrasound and he said he couldn't see anything sinister but still did a biopsy. And I will get my results back via telephone appointment on Thursday. Anyone else had a biopsy taken even though they said it doesn't appear to be cancer? Im still worried but everyone around me seems to be taking it as brilliant news! But I can't think that way, I'm still in limbo and worried

Yes - many times unfortunately as I have a benign breast disease.

Breast cancer in younger woman can be more aggressive than in older ones and the dense breast tissue is harder to image so it sounds like they are just making 100% sure it's nothing to worry about.

Yes I had a lump found on ultrasound, was told it looked like a Fibroadenoma but a biopsy was still needed to confirm.

It's hard not to worry but they really do seem to know if something looks concerning or not. Hopefully your results won't take too long.

Yep me too! I convinced myself I had cancer, and when they wanted to biopsy it (even though they explained very clearly they thought it was benign from examination and ultrasound and were only biopsying due to protocol) I was convinced like you they weren’t telling me something and were “easing me in” to the bad news. This is particularly ridiculous of me as I’m a doctor myself, but our brains aren’t always rational and won’t always register when something is almost certainly fine when it’s scary and there’s a wait to mull these things over. In my hospital, any breast lump in anyone aged >25 is automatically biopsied so it’s most likely just because you aren’t under 25. I’m sure it’ll all be fine, and let us know how you get on!

That’s standard procedure.

And speaking from experience, they don’t tell you you’ve got cancer over the phone.
