How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

Just being nosey really!

How many hours do you average?

What does your routine look like?

Do you feel it's enough?

Do you sleep well?

How many hours do you think you need vs what you get.

Now that my DC are a bit older (4 and 7) I'm getting about 7-8 hours a night.

I'm usually asleep by 11.30/12 and I'm up at 7/7.30

It's not enough, but that's my fault as I end up on Mumsnet instead of sleeping 🤪. I always wake up very tired. Amazing, considering I used to get about 5-6 hours very disturbed sleep and awake at 6am for the day without too much fuss!

I sleep quite well. I'm a heavy sleeper but one of the DC quite often ends up in with us which disturbs us slightly.

I think for me, I need about 9-10 hours sleep a night to feel totally refreshed by morning

On an ideal night about 7.5-8 hours. We turn off the lights at midnight and I naturally wake up around 7.30/8. That's if DD sleeps through the night. If she wakes and needs me to comfort her I'll lie in a bit longer (as long as she doesn't wake up before me haha).

maimeo · 13/09/2021 03:44

Well, awake now since I settled to sleep at 11.30. Tossing and turning, bedclothes on and off, have reflux and also anxious about hospital visit in morning. Have to be up at 6.30 so unlikely to get more than a couple of hours if I am lucky enough to nod off now. This is usual for me..... I HATE insomnia!

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 13/09/2021 03:47

I always aimed for 8 but it was probably more like 6.5-7 as I always struggled to fall asleep straight away.

Now I have a 3 month old so have no idea - maybe 5-6 hours on a good night but in bits?I don't have a problem getting to sleep at night though when the opportunity is there!

I consider myself lucky if I get 6 hours. On the odd occasion I might get 9. Either way, I wake up every hour and a half, nightmares/sweating/pain. I'm permanently tired, never have any energy. I've tried everything I can think of but I cant stay asleep!

romdowa · 13/09/2021 05:12

4 ? Maybe 5 hours of broken sleep but I've been diagnosed with parasonnia so I've kind of always been this way. I rarely sleep through the full night. I'll always be awake around this time for a two hour window. I was told by the sleep specialist that I live in a constant state of sleep deprivation.

DoesHePlayTheFiddle · 13/09/2021 05:31

4 max, and it's really bad for my health.

frogsbreath · 13/09/2021 05:42

4-5 on a good night, but broken. I have a chronic pain condition which on this night has already had me up since just before 5am and I went to sleep about 12.30 ish because I am also an insomniac!

Very tired. Also have no short term memory function after years of getting 2-4 hours sleep.

I listen to a lot of podcasts lol

soughsigh · 13/09/2021 05:43

Pre DS, I got 8 hours a night - bed at 10.30, read for 20 minutes, alarm went at 6.45. My fitbit said I got a lot of deep sleep and didn't wake up much, I would have 7.5hrs of actual sleep.

Now I have a toddler that hates sleep, and I would rather not talk about it.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 13/09/2021 05:49

4-5 hours.

I don't have time for a routine, DS 10 falls asleep in our bed, I carry him in, DD 14 comes in and says "Mummy, can you come?", I say goodnight and then I go to bed, by which time I'm barely awake.

Definitely not enough.

I need 7.5 hours, I get 4-5.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/09/2021 06:10

Around 7, I don't sleep that well and it is often broken sleep. I never feel like I get enough!

Mariell · 13/09/2021 06:13

7/8 hours at night but I also have a nap during the day which recharges me.

purplesequins · 13/09/2021 06:16

my smart watch tells me I get between 7 and 8 hours.
in truth it's a lot less than that as I often wake up and can't go back to sleep and lay awake for hours a bit and listen to podcasts.

I feel best if I get 7 hours uninterrupted.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/09/2021 06:25

6-7 ish, nearer 6. Awake at 5am most days (not through choice).

Beautifulday345 · 13/09/2021 07:03

These responses are crazy!! How are you all functioning, I fall asleep by 10:30 every night I can’t keep my eyes open and wake up at 6:30/7 😳 also have children, luckily they sleep through now though

EileenGC · 13/09/2021 07:16

Anything from 6.5 to 8 hours. Depends on work schedule - if I finish work at 11.30pm I won’t fall asleep until closer to 1, but need to be up at 7/7:30 regardless - or my body clock will automatically wake me up.

Like today, first day off in weeks and set myself a 9am alarm. Nope, was wide awake at 7.09 Angry

Do I feel rested? Only if I’ve gone to bed around 10/10.30, regardless of amount of hours. I feel better after 10.30pm-5am than if I did midnight-9.30am. I don’t feel rested half the week, on the days I don’t get to leave work until 10pm, which is my ideal bedtime…

Ladyrattles · 13/09/2021 09:40

5-7 hours usually, though some nights I get no sleep at all. Peri menopause sucks

SpnBaby1967 · 13/09/2021 10:03

I can get anywhere from 2 hours to 9 hours. I'm a terrible sleeper, but I do find if I can get 9 hours that seems to be about right. Enough for me to be able to get up and about without too much struggle and manage my day. Anything less and i'm a zombie.

When the kids were young I frequently slept for just a couple of hours at a time, and had more energy than I do now.

wendz86 · 13/09/2021 10:15

About 6-7 hours normally. I go to sleep around 11/11.30 and my youngest daughter wakes up anytime between 5.30-7. She is 6 but only just started consistently sleeping through so actually feel quite refreshed now as the sleep isn't broken.

lljkk · 13/09/2021 10:17

I sleep pretty badly, terminal insomnia, segmented sleep, high sleep effort, all those. Had insomnia issues my whole life but babies made it much worse.
I get A LoT of exercise, I imagine I'd only get half as much sleep without it
Probably 5-6 avg hrs/night
I'm sure it's causing brain deteoration, but I day-to-day manage fine on 5-6
9-10 hrs would be a lovely

Cam2020 · 13/09/2021 11:27

6 hours and I'm at my best on that.

YanTanTethera123 · 13/09/2021 11:27

I need 9-11 hours but rarely wake refreshed.
Usually 4 hours off sleep, awake at 2am and that’s it unless I nod off again about 5am.
Recently I have needed an afternoon snooze (luckily I am retired) when is completely unheard of for me ☹️
I do wonder if my heart failure is worsening hence the awful fatigue and poor sleep.

Chikapu · 13/09/2021 11:49

8-9 hours every night, it's extremely rare that I don't sleep all the way through. A lot of my same age friends (50s) are having problems sleeping all night due to night sweats or peeing and I'm so grateful not to be having those problems (I realise things can and most likely will change though).

Pootlemcsmootle · 10/02/2025 09:30

Reviving this slightly old thread because it's about sleep! Reading through it most people seem to have, in reality, a really bad night's sleep (on average)! Is this partly peri?

I'm asking because I'm usually a good sleeper but been battling a bit of insomnia / bad sleep for about 3 weeks now (seems to be a good night followed by a couple of bad ones) after a particularly heavy work contract and two back to back viruses (caught one from DS and one from DH!). Does anyone else experience this during a virus?

PileOfBooks · 10/02/2025 12:57

Oh I would so love 8-9 hours. We're up at 6.30 so that would be bed by 9 realistically which is impossible for us.

Maybe once there isn't a school run...
