Chickenpox in DC vaccinated against it already

NC briefly for boring medical query!
DD1 age 7 and DD2 age 5 had chicken pox vaccine nearly 2 years ago. On Friday DD2 had about 15 spots on her torso which really looked like chicken pox early stage. She has had a snuffly nose, mild cold, itchy eyes the week before and both children have been knackered which we put down to new school year.

48 hours later and DD2 spots still look the same, no more coming up, not fluid filling, she says a bit itchy but isn't scratching. She is still snuffly and a bit irritable (but then she's been stuck indoors since Friday!) and a tummy ache.

Does anyone know if CP presents differently if you've had the vaccine? Crucially, might these spots never blister/scab? I feel like they are fading so if they are less prominent tomorrow can we think she's not infectious??

Or maybe this isn't CP at all?

DD1 meanwhile has one spot on her chest which is similar to DD2.

Can you tell I really want the answer to be "she's fine, send her to school"Grin

We were told that they can still get chicken pox with the jag it just wouldn't be as severe.

Poxychild · 12/09/2021 16:56

yes ! I just don't know what "not as severe" means- how do i know when they are better if the spots aren't changing or scabbing?

I got the measles after the mmr jab. I was fine but still infectious so had to stay home. The vaccine doesn't stop children spreading it unfortunately

It is possible to get CP still. Australia routinely vaccinate children against CP; a few years ago a teacher friend out there told me a CP variant swept through the school

Poxychild · 12/09/2021 17:02

Yup- got that too - the question I'm asking is whether the mild case presents differently & how do i know when the infectiousness stops if the spots are not doing the classic chicken pox progression.

My DD was vaccinated... and has had chicken pox 3 times!
She's never felt very ill with any of them.
Good luck!

i know they can have CP I just don't know if they are still infectious.

DD1 had the vaccine when she was 1. At 4 she caught chicken pox from DD2 who got it when she was too young to have been vaccinated. She had about 7 spots (and moaned more than poor DD2 who was covered 😄) but as far as I remember they were typical chicken pox spots and did the whole blistering before healing.

Gregdaviessss · 12/09/2021 17:07

My sister currently has it - 45 years after she first had it! Not shingles though, doc says it's chicken pox

elaeocarpus · 12/09/2021 17:09

From the CDC
". Vaccinated people who get chickenpox may develop lesions that do not crust. These people are considered contagious until no new lesions have appeared for 24 hours."

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 12/09/2021 17:10

I'd do it by time OP. Usually they take about 7 days to blister over, so I'd use the same 7 day period and say they are not infectious after that.

Gotobloodysleep · 12/09/2021 17:10

Have they had the booster? My two were vaxxed against cp. the eldest was closer to needing the booster when he got them and he had more spots than dc2 and was more ill in himself. Dc2 caught it a few months after the vax and was less bothered, had less spots and that didn't bother him as much. It took the same amount of time for the spot to scan over and heal though.

ooooh thank you - that is very useful & sorry I didn't find it myself. Will watch them like hawk & maybe get away with only 1 or 2 days off school if no more appear today/tomorrow
