Hair ideas when swimming

I swim a couple of times a week. I’ve got very long, very thick hair and really don’t like getting it wet in the pool, so try to put it up in a bun, however, I had a head injury a few years back, and find having my hair tied up hurts my head after a while, as it’s very heavy. I tried a swimming cap, but I just don’t have the dexterity to get it on, plus I’ve still got to tie my hair up first.

Am I missing an obvious solution, other than just getting it wet? Chlorine really doesn’t agree with my hair!

Mines long but short enough for a bun not to bother me so I do that.

I just get it wet, then use Kit and Kaboodle shampoo.

You could also try leaving conditioner in then plaiting before you get in.

I might just end up cutting it shorter. It’s the sheer weight of it up in a high bun that hurts as it pulls on my scar. I’m ok with it in a low ponytail. I’ll give that shampoo a try, thanks.

You can get fabric (rather than silicone) hats that are easy to put on/tuck hair into. Splashproof rather than waterproof though.

Two big plaits and pin them Oktoberfest style over non hurty bits of your head?

Sometimes I wear my hair in space buns for swimming, but mainly I do a french plait and then pin it up or use a crocodile clip.

Can I derail slightly and ask how long you swim for? I've recently started swimming regularly and I can't gauge how long/far you're meant to do it for.

I’m not a particularly strong swimmer as I’m physically disabled and do it mainly for rehab/physio purposes so probably not the best person to ask to be honest! I’m in the pool for about an hour a time, but I walk a length/swim a length as it’s good for my legs.

Ooh I’ve not seen these, I’ll have a look. I find the rubber ones nigh on impossible to get on.

French braid and clip the end of the pony to the top of your head. It distributes the weight of the hair all over your scalp.

You can get long hair hats.

Much more comfy and easier to put on.

Speedo sell them.

According to DD's swimming teachers, you should get your hair wet with clean water first. It repels the chlorine and doesn't damage your hair as much

Comedycook · 12/09/2021 14:39

Maybe a sort of hair wrap a bit like a turban

groundcontroltomontydon · 12/09/2021 14:43

Googling lycra swim caps should give some options, op Smile

PeonyTime · 12/09/2021 14:49

Yep, drench your hair with shower water first, to keep the chlorine out, then an antichlorine shampoo afterwards.

AnguaResurgam · 12/09/2021 15:08

Google for swimming caps for long hair, dreadlocks and afro. They have much more space for your hair and you might find them easier to get on and off
