Changing my daughter’s name by deed poll

I would like to change my 2 year old daughter’s name by deed poll. I just want to have her surname double barrelled so that it includes mine. Her dad who I’m not married to and not with is in agreement. Do I need a solicitor to do this? Is it easy? Thanks in advance Smile

You cannot change a child's name without consent of everyone with PR

Assuming he has PR, as he does not agree, you would need a court order to change her name. It is difficult to get such an order, unless there are exceptional circumstances.

I changed my name by deed poll, and you don't have to pay anything. Just print off a free form online and get it signed by two witnesses.

Could I suggest that you read the OP again, and not skim-read it?

I don't think you need a solicitor.

ShrimpBarbarian · 11/09/2021 18:20

To be fair, it did at first glance looking the father was not in agreement

Punctuation is your friend

I think it's a little more complicated for kids because of having to have responsible parents agree - looked it up for my kids as they want to add my surname as a middle name as DH did a few years ago (I didn't change it when I married because it works with my first name, but kids have DH's surname as it's less boring).

Echobelly · 11/09/2021 19:08

Actually, I tell a lie, it's only complicated if there's any court orders around it, otherwise you just saying both parents are fine with it is sufficient.

In fact I've just gone and done it, as want to get DS new passport so want to do it before that.

Farahilda · 11/09/2021 19:11

I didn't skim.

I did make a mistake - two words jumped round. One of the perils of dyslexia.

My apologies OP - I'm sure you've managed to ignore my post without commenting.

I did exactly this when my daughter was about two. I double barrelled her name. No you do not need a solicitor, just a witness. All very straight forward. Was really pleased I did it x

Hi
May I ask did you have to pay for it?
I could see two options unenrolled and enrolled ones on gov website.
Which one should I do?

You can do an unenrolled, but some places may not accept it.

I changed mine, unenrolled and have never had any issues. Once you get the passport (and DL for 15+) there is no icy who won't accept those as your ID.

I have changed my own surname and didn’t pay anyone a penny, there isn’t an actual deed poll and my witnessed self-declaration was good enough for my bank which meant my updated bank statement was good enough for the passport office which is then good enough for everything else.

in the case of a child, as you both agree then I would imagine the best thing would be to re-register her name with the registrars office and have her birth certificate updated and re-issued.
