Car seat for grandson advice please

From next month I will be looking after my 8 month old grandson a couple of days per week. I am looking to buy a car seat for him that will last for a good while. My Dil wants him rear facing for as long as possible so I am looking to buy something that starts rearfacing but that will grow with him. I'm not looking to pay 100s of pounds but don't want to buy rubbish. It's 30 years since I bought a car seat so I'm a bit out of touch with what is good bad. Any advice please?

I'd ask dd which one she uses and buy the same.

Posted too soon.

Is there a reason you are buying it? Presuming you are doing the childcare for free, I think it's incredibly generous of you to pay for the carseat as well.

Are they happy with the one he’s currently in? Surely it makes most sense to get the same one if they are. You can’t go wrong then!

Maybe they should be buying the seat if you are providing childcare

Seats that ERF don’t tend to be cheap - we have the BeSafe Izi but from memory that was around £400. A couple of friends have the Joie 360 which is around the £200 markbI think.

Look at Joie seats.

If he is big for his age, look at one that will harness to 25kg, not the standard 18kg.

Mark i think*

I don't think you'll get much that goes past 4 at this stage anyway, and if possible you should be aiming to rear face until then anyway. We have the Joie 360 and are still rear facing our (exceptionally tall) 2.5 year old.

Are you on Facebook? The group "Rear Facing Car Seat Safety" seems to be quite good for giving options at different price ranges.

RosaBaby2 · 11/09/2021 16:30

I think Joie stages would be a good one for what you've described. That rear faces up to 18kg is around £120

There is a cheaper Joie which performs well in testing which is the Joie tilt however this will only last rear facing til 18kg it is around £70-80

We have the Britax two way elite which rear faces til 25kg (approx 6 years old) £180

Lockdownbear · 11/09/2021 16:38

I'd look at one of the ones that spin so the Britax Duo or Joie 360. Makes it much easier to get them in rather than twisting yourself to get them in.

Ask your DiL. Tell her or your son you are prepared to put X amount towards a car seat but they have to order it and make sure it fits your car.
