Just that really - anyone else started late and actually enjoyed it snd carried on.

I have joined a beginners ladies group locally. Did my first run yesterday.

How far was the first run?

Did it kill you.
Half joking. I'm 51 and the backs of my calves are in agony from NOT doing any exercise (i think) I used to be quite active but I can't even walk normally today. I need to do stretches when I recover.

Burnamer · 11/09/2021 15:37

Well done OP! Were you fairly sporty anyway?

GoWalkabout · 11/09/2021 15:43

I have been going for a while but I am marathon training and I am 50 next year. It will take me all day, but we'll gloss over that bit Grin

I am not at all sporty - probably 12 years ago I used to go to the gym and run on the treadmill- never really ran outdoors but I would love to.

It's a very slow start - 1 minute running, 1.5 minutes walking - for less than 20 minutes. Need to do two more short runs as homework. It's an 8 week course and apparently I will be able to run 5k at the end of it. I think it's like couch to 5k but sociable. Wish me luck!

Oh good for you! I did the 0-5k British heart foundation thing a couple of years ago and it was really good. I do need to do something again.

generalh · 11/09/2021 16:56

I would love to run again but my bladder refuses to play ball.

Icecreamsprinkles · 11/09/2021 17:03

54 year old runner here. I started again a couple of years ago and have dipped in and out since . My only advice would be take it slowly and listen to your body I have been guilty of not doing this and pushing myself too much and have had quite a few injuries. I now know 10k is my max distance before my knees start rebelling! I also take calcium and joint supplements as I worry about my bones now .
Sounds like you are doing it the right way . I find running has been a savour for my mental health

Fantastic!

Which supplements do you take, please.

They're building a new running track 1 min from my office and i have been wondering if i could do a lap of that track without a PE teacher yelling at me. I want to find out.

It makes such a difference not having a PE teacher yelling and insulting you! Bonus points for positive/ encouraging podcasts/ apps these days.

My Mum started running at a similar
age and we’ve done several half marathons together since Smile
Age is no limit

Singinginshower · 11/09/2021 23:20

Let us know how you get on OP!

LowlyTheWorm · 11/09/2021 23:24

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I wish I had half of your motivation…

crispsinasandwich · 17/09/2021 11:56

Well I did my second run today with the group and I was rubbish. I'm always at the back anyway – which I have no problem with – but I was a long way behind. But the other ladies in the group are absolutely lovely and I will go back. Wish me luck

MistandMud · 17/09/2021 11:59

Somebody should be running with you, Crisps. We’re all over 50 in our group (well, there might be an occasional rogue 45yr old) and nobody gets left behind.

YouLando · 17/09/2021 12:07

Well done OP! 😊👍
I did C25k last year at age 50 and have been running ever since, best thing I've done in years.

The leader would slow down and run with me - but I am much slower than the others. I'll only get quicker if I keep at it.

Good on ya, OP!!

crispsinasandwich · 24/09/2021 13:45

I hope it's ok for me to use this as my little journal. I did my run with the group today - it was hard but everyone is so lovely and supportive- and my knee is much better too - so all good.

Well done, @crispsinasandwich!
I live somewhere hilly and so got a treadmill for Christmas. I now run (not super quickly) on it about 4 times per week as well as a good brisk hilly dog walk most days. I feel fantastic and sleep well. I'm 52

My 74YO DSF runs loads of marathons each year!

AuntieStella · 24/09/2021 15:02

Oh well done!

I started running at 50ish and it's the best thing I ever did

Thank you. I too run very slow - speed may come in the future.

Well done to your DSF!

Go very gently at any sign of a sore knee -- they're fragile things.

You might want to try some of these:

(Bonus -- toned bum!)
