Me and DD (3yo at the time) had the same routine every day. I used to go for a walk for an hour or so before picking her up from school at 3pm. We would come home and I'd go to the kitchen to make coffee for me and a snack for her while she went into the living room to put on the TV for Cbeebies. That day I was waiting for the kettle to boil and making a sandwich when she came in and said 'Tweenies isn't on, there are buildings on fire instead'. I went in to have a look and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I told DD it was a film and put a Tweenies video on in her room while I watched the coverage and saw the towers fall.
I remember the days that followed, fighter jets in the sky - I lived close to the huge DWP office complex on Tyneside which was at the time the second largest office complex in the world after the Pentagon, and because it was a government building there was concern it might be a target. When I see the footage now, it's still as shocking and viscerally upsetting as it was that day. I can't imagine what loved ones of those who were lost must feel when they see it, or what they must be going through today
