Me and DD (3yo at the time) had the same routine every day. I used to go for a walk for an hour or so before picking her up from school at 3pm. We would come home and I'd go to the kitchen to make coffee for me and a snack for her while she went into the living room to put on the TV for Cbeebies. That day I was waiting for the kettle to boil and making a sandwich when she came in and said 'Tweenies isn't on, there are buildings on fire instead'. I went in to have a look and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I told DD it was a film and put a Tweenies video on in her room while I watched the coverage and saw the towers fall.

I remember the days that followed, fighter jets in the sky - I lived close to the huge DWP office complex on Tyneside which was at the time the second largest office complex in the world after the Pentagon, and because it was a government building there was concern it might be a target. When I see the footage now, it's still as shocking and viscerally upsetting as it was that day. I can't imagine what loved ones of those who were lost must feel when they see it, or what they must be going through today Flowers

I was at work in London. I worked in publishing and the nature of it meant someone was always keeping an eye on the news. So suddenly it was 'omg look what's happening' and we all watched it. It was so surreal I just couldn't believe it was actually happening - it looked like a disaster film. I used to live in NY and took the Path train from the World Trade Center every day.

I was in college. I didn't even know what the twin towers were! We got sent home as our tutor had lots of family in NYC and wanted to check on them.

I was in the car on the way home with my mum from 6th form (was my second week) it was on the radio and then my dad had the news on when we got home. Couldn't comprehend what we were seeing and had a lot of phone calls checking on my dad as he traveled to the states a lot for work.

I was in buffalo, new york state.
we were in a motel before we wanted to drive to nyc, spend a day and night in manhattan and fly back home the next evening.

our first thought was that 'security at the airport tomorrow will be tight, better get there early'. the extend only became clear during the day.

scary was that communications were impossible, phones not working, internet down at public terminals. we couldn't reach the bank at first to extend credit card limit and to contact family.

I was 8. I was at school. My dad was on his way to the states for a business trip. The first thing I knew I was pulled from class and told to sit in reception, I had no clue what could possibly be wrong but I had a sense something was horribly wrong.

The radio was on in the office and I heard what was going on.

My mum arrived at school and collected me.

She explained what had happened and told me she was waiting and trying to reach dad and that hopefully it wouldn't have been his flight. (Parents divorced for years by this point so she didn't know exact details)

I remember being at home for the next few hours with my brother and sister in radio silence no TV or radio allowed.

Dad called eventually, we were eating our tea by the time he eventually got through.

That evening I remember watching the news it was all very surreal.

I was trying to find my first job. Trawling round temp agencies in London utterly clueless and miserable.

Got my first temp job a week later and when there was a fire alarm one of the staff said how much more panicky she was hearing an alarm now than she would have been the week before. I didn't really get it.
