Reusable sandwich packaging that’s not ££ or a huge pain to wash every day?

69 replies

StroppyTop · 11/09/2021 09:34

3 packed lunches every day, soon to be 4 when the office opens - has anyone found reusable that is easy to wash every day and won’t break the bank?

Separate smaller Tupperware is an option for me but won’t fit it the small lunchboxes 2 of the DC prefer.

Are beeswax wraps long-lasting and easy to clean?

Stasher bags.
I've had mine for 3 years and it's been dishwashed upside down on the top rack all that time. I'd like the whole set in every colour.

@Caspianberg

Not super eco, but the IKEA sandwich bags. They are plastic resealable. About £1 for two sizes of 20 ish of each. I have been using and rinsing the same couple for about 2 years now as they are pretty thick and durable. So plastic yes, but washable. I just wash and open bag to dry on drainer.

Using atm to take baby bowl/ spoon out and about. It often gets used and filthy in cafe and I can just put really dirty bowl/ bib/ spoon back in bag and seal, and clean and sort out at home. Doesn’t leak.

I have these already 🤦🏼‍♀️ I guess I wasn’t sure about washing them loads but also guess I should try!

@RightOnTheEdge

I have some of those sandwich wraps with the velcro and they are great, the velcro doesn't get near the sandwiche on mine and the inside is really easy to wipe clean.

I got mine from Avon but I don't think they do them anymore. They do have them on ebay though.

That is cute and looks v cleanable. Did you take photos especially for this thread? If so, you are kind Flowers

@holidaynearlyover

I don't like beeswax wraps as they never seem clean as you can only rinse in cold water or the wax melts. DD likes salami or chicken so not idea if you can't wash properly.

We use reusable plastic sandwich bags, can't remember the make but they are still going strong after quite a while (although to be fair covid has stunted the amount they are used!)

You’ve articulated why I was hesitant about wax wraps, thank you

@Evvyjb

I made my own beeswax wraps, because I am ridiculous.... but I also have a lovely compartmentalised box. Will check brand later...
That’s the kind of thing I too would have done 15 years ago but am now way too tired for. My friends and family would have been hiding as I came at them with yet more handmade beeswax wraps.

Slim sistemas here too - they actually fit a lot in and work fine with our thick chunky sandwiches. They have already lasted 4 years and still look absolutely fine.

SallyOMalley · 11/09/2021 14:45

We've got the slim 'single layer' Sistema boxes too. Bought them when my dc started in Early Years and they've just gone into year 8. Not bad!

We've also got the sistema double layer bento boxes which tend to get more use for school lunches these days. The slim ones we use when we need four packups in a cool bag for a day out or something.

SallyOMalley · 11/09/2021 14:47

The other thing I like about sistema stuff is that they stack well. No playing sandwich box skittles in the morning!

SlumdogMummy · 11/09/2021 14:50

I use these www.re-wrap-it.co.uk/ They're great and work for different sized sandwiches, rolls etc. I spray with anti bac and wipe every day then wash them on a Friday.

StroppyTop · 11/09/2021 21:32

So many options! Roll on payday.

@StroppyTop re bananas - it would have to be one of those really small ones to fit in a sistema box I think. Mine go through about 865375 bananas a week at home so packed lunches tend to be a banana free zone.

For those asking about big fat messy sandwiches - my middle one loves tuna mayo and they all like BLTs. Sometimes I use a bit of kitchen towel just to help semi secure it but we’ve never had a sandwich explosion. Pitta bread / pitta pockets are fab for things like that too.

StroppyTop · 12/09/2021 07:51

Thanks @WinterCarlisle. Also can’t believe it’s never occurred to me to make cold BLTs for lunchboxes!

We use reusable sandwich bags from Amazon. Have a look, there are loads of options. We use the clear kind with the coloured top that you just press together. To be honest they are one of the best things I've ever bought, used, rinsed and left upside down on the draining board and used again. We've had ours about 2 years and they are still perfect.

Tried beeswax but couldn't get along with it and paper bags are ok but not really reusable in the same way.

purplesequins · 12/09/2021 08:19

we have clip lid boxes similar to fhe systema one a pp posted.
why would they not fit the linch bag?
my dc take the box with a sandlich, a box with fruit or veg and a small tub (snack box type with clip lid) of yoghurt decanted from a large container.
water bottle goes outside.

Custardslice3 · 12/09/2021 08:33

We use the plastic bag that cheese comes in (you know the ones with the resealable zip along the top) for sandwiches. They are much thicker than a sandwich bag so stand up to washing easily and they are the perfect size for a round of sandwiches.

I also have a velcro wrap which I use occassionally. The one I have was bought, but I've made them as gifts for family. If you can manage basic sewing with a machine then they are very easy to make. I use the bag from a cereal packet (opened out and washed) for the inside and then whatever fabric I have for the outside. That way I know the plastic layer is food grade as I wasn't sure about some of the plastics fabrics I could buy.

peridito · 12/09/2021 09:02

SIstema do a larger box that I use
sistemaplastics.com/products/klip-it-plus/520ml-square.

I think mine were from Wilko's and are not Sistema .

As an aside ,I've come to hate silicone products as stuff just seems to cling to the surface and they are hard to clean without large quantities of v hot water and copious amounts of washing up liquid .But we don't have a dishwasher .
