Baby formula

Hi All,

My 5 month old has been on Alimentum since he was 3 weeks old. The paediatrician has said to start the milk ladder and to mix the Alimentum with formula.

I mixed 1 spoonful of aptimal formula in his first bottle and 2 hours later he was really sick, no rash just sicked up all his bottle.

Someone said to try and do it with Kendamil as aptimal may be too rich for the baby. Same thing happened, 2 hours later was sick.

Anybody else had anything similar?

Thanks

Does it not just mean they still can't tolerate cows milk protein?
Is it not quite early to start the milk ladder? I thought they did that later on and start with cooked milk products

Milk ladder starts with cooked products with milk and ends on straight milk/formula. I'm not sure they've given you the appropriate information

The paediatrician said to do this with the first bottle in the morning. Mix 1 spoonful of formula on day 1 and then 2 spoonfuls on day 2 and so on until day 7.

I haven’t started weening yet and wonder if they are doing this to see if they are to ween dairy free?

If your child is not tolerating it then I'd stop and ask them why they aren't following the proper milk ladder.

My dd ( she's 10 now) was cmpi. Drs/dietitian never asked me to try new formula. Maybe I got lucky or maybe they were just shit who knows, but they didnt want to rock the boat as she was doing so much better.

At a yr ( as you would with a baby swapping iver to cows milk ) I was told we could swap to either alpro junior plus or koko.

With regards to the milk ladder as a pp said it started off with tiny amounts in a highly processed or cooked form.

Giving another perspective I found the whole milk ladder thing stressful especially as toddlers cry over everything so determining whether she was must cranky at the sky being the wrong colour or having a tummy ache was nigh on impossible.

In the end ( and the dietitian was happy with this as her diet was good ) I stopped obsessing about getting her to eat cows milk. Stuck to the alternatives and remained dairy free until she could physically tell me. She grew out of it fine and it was not the big deal ( being dairy free) i thought it would be.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I’ll speak to the paediatrician next week

I think the paediatrician has asked you to do a ‘milk challenge’ to confirm a diagnosis of CMPA, before you set about weaning. If baby reacts to the challenge, they will advise you on how to wean using a milk free diet. Then after this they will ask you to do the milk ladder to gently reintroduce dairy and see if your child can tolerate it.

This is a milk challenge www.allergyuk.org/assets/000/001/298/Home_Reintroduction_Protocol_to_Confirm_or_Exclude_Diagnosis_original.pdf?1502805714

My paediatrician has asked me to do the same Smile

My DD had CMPA and we started the milk ladder when she was 1 years old. I don’t think you are doing that but agree with crumble.

I think it’s what crumble
