Differences between the nations of UK

This feels daft to have to ask, but where can I find differences in day-to-day living between England/ Scotland/Wales/ Northern Ireland? I'm thinking particularly for students from one country but studying in another. Scottish students don't pay tuition fees (I think) and people in Wales don't pay prescription fees etc

Dc has chosen to study in another country (probably to get further away from family HmmGrin ) but I feel as if I need more info!

@pareyea

I’m Scottish, but by christ are some of the above posters chippy
Yeah, tell me about it. There's always at least one of my fellow Scots who posts some shite about England and then comes back to protest 'But it's TRUE!' No, it really isn't.

Chippy as fuck.

@thevassal you make a really good point:

A 19 y/o male student in Swansea and a 19 y/o male student in Leeds would probably have a lot more in common than the 19 y/o Swansea student would have with a 60 y/o woman living in Anglesey, etc etc

But it's also interesting to hear about prescriptions/ dentists etc

Also agree with local words - I was a student in Newcastle from the SE and learned what felt like a new language (uni lecturers recommended we went to see Andy Capp which was playing at the time Smile)

@MindyStClaire - you made me laugh but I did check - we're not international enough!

The university website may well have some resources for international students that you find useful.

I suppose I'm more conscious and the differences seem more pronounced after 18 months of pandemic with the different governments making different rules for managing.

But thank you to everyone for your input 🙏

I didn't mean that English students are international in Wales. Obviously. Just that if the university has lots of international students there may be a section on their website about NHS etc that may describe some of those differences to you.

It's really only about quarantine and tranfers from LHR. But it actually would be useful for 'incoming' students wouldn't it? I wonder about a campus uni vs a city based one as to how insular a campus is - some I've seen could actually be any uni anywhere in the world with virtually no reference to the outside world even within a very small distance (and I've visited loads in plenty of countries!)

It's allowed to leave school aged 16 in Scotland, without any requirement still to be in education till 18.

MindyStClaire · 09/09/2021 20:35

Ah ok, I think ours has lots of info on the city and useful links etc, but we have a lot of international students. It's a while since I've looked though.

Same in Wales.

Scotland has a NOT-PROVEN verdict in court cases.
