Gardeners advice needed

This spring I planted some delphiniums. They looked ok in the beginning but look pretty bad. Could it be that my soil is not right? I saw some small insect on them early in spring as well. Even my sweet peas are covered in white. I'll try attaching some pics

I don't want to get rid of the flowers but if I can't sort them out might have to

Have you been treating these plants with anything? The white covering in the second photo (what plant is this? It doesn't look like a delphinium?) looks like fungus. The foxglove needs the dead leaves removed and it looks like you have a weed tangled through it?

Cakeonthefloor · 09/09/2021 16:05

The white looks like mildew fungus, probably caused by too little water. As delphiniums are deciduous their leaves will be dying down this time of year.

chesirecat99 · 09/09/2021 16:05

That looks like powdery mildew on the delphiniums. You could try regularly spraying with 40% milk 60% water to prevent it next year.

It looks like the foxglove has a fungal infection too.

Why don't you join the gardening board? I'm sure someone will have better advice there Smile

Powdery mildew is caused by lack of water. It's been very dry for ages so maybe that's the cause.

chesirecat99 · 09/09/2021 16:40

Powdery mildew is caused by a range of fungi. Under watering, over fertilisation, lack of air circulation, lack of sun, high humidity, overhead watering early or late in the day so the leaves are wet for prolonged periods can all contribute to creating the ideal conditions.

Foxglove leaves always look like that at this time of year - just cut the scabby ones off.

Like other pp's say the other one has powdery mildew, which has a number of causes.

Thanks all for your replies Flowers Lots of great answers!

I will try again next summer to see what happens. And if it doesn't improve will just have to look for different plants. It's a fairly small garden that I have so it's a shame to see flowers not flourishing but I'm not the best at gardening. But keep on trying!

Thanks again, will look for gardening board next time Smile
