The best wedding you ever went to?

Just a follow on from the thread about terrible wedding food (yes I did read every post in case my wedding was mentioned, ha!)

What was the BEST wedding that you have been to? Not your own, unless it was especially epic Wink

Best wedding was the one that wasn't legal 🙄
Wedding in Spain, 5 days of laying by a pool in a really old ex monastery type boutique hotel in the middle of nowhere, great people, fab outside wedding, cost us an absolute fortune but hey it was oh's family member.
Turns out the wedding wasn't legal, it was just going through the motions, they were supposed to get married in a registry office on their return, 5 years later they still haven't been to the registry office and are not legally married.
It still irritates me, we spent £1000's, flights, hotel, meals, drinks, excursions, outfits, expensive present etc for 5 days in Spain

Tictocrobot · 08/09/2021 20:19

Ha! Sounds amazing, but bonkers that they didn’t actually get married!

@Dizzy1234 that’s insane, I’d be annoyed they weren’t actually married too

Best weddings (other than my own):

  • a simple register office do followed by a marquee in a field where the brides parents made amazing Indian snacks (samosas etc) and we had fish and chips. The not so good part is that we were part of the clean up team, quite a lot of work.
  • a big cathedral wedding with EPIC music both during ceremony and the band in the evening, food not so good but can’t win everything.
Interestingly both the above were second marriages for one party 😊

Village hall, free bar, buffet meal, ceilidh band followed by disco, van turns up at door with chips and rolls and sausage! Helped by fabulous family and a genuinely happy, loving couple. The vibe was just perfect.

Best ever!

MartyHart · 08/09/2021 20:29

Mine was epic but wouldn't sound it to anyone else

escapeyou · 08/09/2021 20:32

Mine

Got married at home, BBQ, bouncy castle, kids entertainers, a band, a lot of food, a lot of drink, everyone wore what they wanted. The only thing we asked is that no football colours were worn. No gifts but we did collect for charity.

ImInStealthMode · 08/09/2021 20:34

Registry office, photos in a nice park, party style reception in a marquee out the back of a pub with a buffet made by mums and aunts. No formality, lovely day.

It's the basis for mine and DP's wedding next year.

On a Greek island and we all stayed for a long weekend and swam in the sea under the stars after the wedding wound down. I made friends that have lasted for a decade since because we all had such a fab time and bonded so much. And it wasn’t a wanky extravagant overseas wedding, the bride was Greek.

ISeeTheLight · 08/09/2021 20:35

A (secular) Jewish wedding of close friends where we got served a stupid amount of cocktails. I was pretty tipsy before the ceremony had even started. The ceremony was done by a lovely female rabbi. We're not Jewish so has no idea what to expect. The food was good and the party great - for some reason they had a Jamaican band that also played the traditional Jewish music at the start (with the bride being lifted on a chair etc), followed by more free cocktails and regular rock/pop music played by the same band. Around 1am the party finished and we sat in the bar of the venue (hotel) drinking whiskey until the sun was up. It was amazing.

LadyofMisrule · 08/09/2021 20:38

I don't think I've ever really been to a wedding I've enjoyed. Including my own. They all involve having to get dressed up, make conversation with people I don't know, and have fun to someone else's organised schedule, and they invariably involve lots of hanging around. I love seeing my friends happily married, but I don't enjoy the circus that surrounds it.

Scarby9 · 08/09/2021 20:40

As a child, the older Scottish cousins' weddings.
Ceilidh for everyone! Staying up until 2am!
There was never a feeling that children were in the way, or not wanted. We danced every dance with anyone who offered.
My dad said it was tumblers of neat whisky for the adults from 4pm, so maybe we children kept going on the alcohol fumes.

Longdistance · 08/09/2021 20:40

Apart from my own (lots of fun was had, really chilled, lots of booze, good food and dancing), I went to one recently, registry office, marquee in pub garden, very relaxed with only 30 guests, band in the evening, kebabs for evening offering. Marvellous.

LadyofMisrule · 08/09/2021 20:40

Mind you, I think I'd have enjoyed @OllyBJolly, @escapeyou and @ImInStealthMode's weddings. Maybe I just get invited to the wrong ones.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 08/09/2021 20:42

Mine. Best party ever. Everyone really up for a party. Really really happy and fun and relaxed day.

Would your friends have worn football colours to a wedding if you hadn't specified that?!

Village hall, cheap accommodation a tent not too far from home, in lieu of a gift bring a dish for the buffet and BYOB. Great dancing and band

I'd always fancied a big white wedding for myself until that wedding it was great

escapeyou · 08/09/2021 20:45

No idea chocolate.

Notthisnotthat · 08/09/2021 20:46

The wedding was in a local church and the reception was held in the local hall and a marquee set up along side. They thought of everything for the guests, lots of canapés during the photos, lots of Prosecco, beer and soft drinks and a Prosecco station that had fresh berries, syrups etc the meal was simple but amazing and the band got everyone up dancing. Also helped that the bride and groom are a lovely couple whose love was obvious.

My own wedding was great but hers was my favourite as a guest.

Scarby9 · 08/09/2021 20:49

Not necessarily the best wedding I've been too, although it was lovely, but this is the best wedding main course I've ever had. You could cut the roast beef with a fork and it tasted fabulous. Probably the best roast beef I've ever had anywhere.
PS. Vegetables were also available.

The best wedding you ever went to?
MissAmbrosia · 08/09/2021 20:50

A Kent castle in the winter. Wedding late afternoon, in front of the fire, followed by jacket potatoes and lots of fillings. Then we went to local pub for an hour or so. Then back in the evening for a ceilidh and late night nibbles. Minibus home. It was marvellous. Mine was quite nice as we didn't invite anyone bar 2 best friends, had a suite in top London hotel, got married in Chelsea Register Office - wedding venue to the stars Grin - and then went for a nice lunch afterwards.

LowlyTheWorm · 08/09/2021 20:51

The one I met my husband at. Just under a year before our own. ❤️

Scarby9 · 08/09/2021 20:55

Gosh, @LowlyTheWorm!
Was Hugh Grant there? Or Richard Curtis?
'Tis the stuff that dreams are made on, or romantic blockbusters.

CMOTDibbler · 08/09/2021 21:03

One where the reception was in a school hall catered by the ladies of the brides family church. It was massively relaxed, food was plentiful and non faffy (I very much enjoyed jelly and icecream for pudding though there were other choices).
Also another where we walked to a teeny country church close to the brides families house then back to the house for a lovely meal under a series of gazebos tied together in the garden with loads of fairy lights

Tictocrobot · 08/09/2021 21:43

I love reading these. I agree with lots of you that the best weddings are the most chilled.

I think jelly for pudding just won me over
