Apply for FT job but I want PT hours?

I've seen a job I would like to apply for but it is full time hours and I only want to work part-time.

Should I just give it a miss? Or shouId I phone before I submit an application and ask if they would consider part-time? Or apply and then if they offer, say I only want part-time/ job share? The problem with the latter is it is a lot of work doing the job application and interview prep, if I get an interview, only to be told, ' not its full time only, we said full-time in the advert, numpty.'

Go forward the job and WHEN they offer it to you negotiate. I’ve done this twice and it’s fine.

TidyOmlette · 08/09/2021 15:42

I would contact them first and enquire, asking during the interview to possibly be told no is a massive waste of your time and theirs

Amz6219 · 08/09/2021 15:44

I'm with @KatyN, if you are right for the job they wouldn't want to lose you and so would probably be accommodating - I have done the same twice too

JLQ1020 · 08/09/2021 15:52

I wouldn't apply if its full time they need full time nothing worse than someone starting a job agreeing in interview they can work requested hours then saying no

NannyGythaOgg · 08/09/2021 15:54

It very much depends on the job whether they are likely to be flexible or not.
In some instances so long as the job is done it doesn't really matter when and you can cover all the work in the time you are there then there may not be a problem. I would wait and see if the job is offered and then negotiate - detailing how you would ensure the job is completed within the time you are offering.
If it is client facing in any way and there needs to be someone physically there between certain hours (e receptionist) then they are unlikely to be impressed with you wanting shorter hours. I would not waste your time or theirs in this situation.

I did this in the nhs, I made it REALLY clear on the application form I would only consider part time. I got the job. Two years later they intermittently ask if I would like to increase my hours. I'm holding out so far...

It depends on the job.

In my last role, there was an option to apply on a PT basis which the interview panel totally missed. I managed to negotiate 0.8 FTE, but it was very much a full time role, and I was often working well over my 4 days. I lasted 18 months....

When my current role was advertised it was for a FT role but PT applications would be considered. After the previous debacle, I mad it VERY clear that I was applying on a PT basis, and was aiming for 0.6. They were totally accommodating and have always been great at ensuring that this is stuck to apart from at critical times.

I think I would make it clear on your application you are applying PT. They can then consider whether that would work for them as well.

duckiemonster · 08/09/2021 16:01

Depends how part time tbh - if I was recruiting for full time and someone wanted 4 days a week instead of 5 I'd be willing to consider if they were the top candidate. 2 or 3 days a week, nah.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 08/09/2021 16:06

It depends massively on the job, and what you mean by PT. If you want 0.8, I've had consistent success with negotiating this. If you want 0.5, bit trickier. Higher chance of success the more difficult it is to find good talent for the particular role, and also whether it really does need someone there FT - physical dependencies, very fast moving, etc.

AlexaShutUp · 08/09/2021 16:10

How part time would you want to be?

If you're looking at, say, four days a week, then you could apply and then negotiate. Any less than that and I think you should ask if they would consider a job share. You're wasting their time and yours otherwise.

If it's an extremely niche job and you have particularly sought after skills, they might be willing to accommodate you, but otherwise, better to check first.

Thanks everyone. I think the job is a readvertisment as I saw it a few weeks ago.

Think I will look again at the JD in detail and see if I think it could be done part-time or not.

The last two jobs I have were advertised at full time but once I was offered them I negotiated to work a four day week. If they want you and can accommodate your request it's worth a shot.

Good luck.
