Marmalade pay as you go car insurance for newly passed driver, is it legit?

Hi
As the title says, Marmalade car insurance: dc recently passed their driving test, aged 19.

Looking around online for insurance for dc to drive our family car, by far the cheapest option was Marmalade pay as you go, and the most suitable because dc is away at uni mostly so wouldn't want to drive our car all that often. (dc wont have their own car for a while yet)

www.wearemarmalade.co.uk/pay-as-you-go-insurance

I contacted our main insurer, Aviva to check that it wouldn't invalidate our existing insurance or whatever: I got different answers on Twitter dm and when I phoned the call centre Confused

one said it's up to us yeah it's fine, the other said no it would make our vehicle 'double insured' which is wrong apparently - but the insurance would be specific to our dc, not our car?? And of course if we made a claim, it would only be on one of the policies, depending who was driving
Totally confused

Has anyone used this Marmalade pay as you go insurance for a new driver? Is it legit? Will it invalidate our existing car insurance?

(Im thinking it must be legit/legal because they've been in business a fair few years, I guess Aviva are told to upsell as much as possible!)

I took the learner insurance out for DC but called our own insurance broker first to check they were okay with it. They called the underwriters who said it’s fine as it’s a separate policy for the learner only and doesn’t affect our own policy. Don’t know whether that’s of any help!

I had it for a learner driver and it suited our needs at that time. After passing test it was cheaper to put on existing policy but not all insurers insure new / young drivers. Direct Line do. If dc away at uni you might find it cheaper to just insure for when home eg just 4 weeks added to existing policy during holiday.

Thanks for replies so far Smile

We looked at it. In the end it was actually cheaper just to have dd on the policy all the time than payg
We -did have to shop around a bit and actually phone insurers rather than online because a lot wouldn’t insure a new driver.

It's perfectly legit OP! I used to sell those policies at my last place. They're perfect for those who only need cover occasionally and where the main policy can't or won't offer cover in the same way x
