Kitchen Aid or Kenwood K-mix

LMW1990 · 07/09/2021 20:53

I need to buy a new stand mixer. I have the opportunity to buy one through a work salary sacrifice scheme abc have narrowed it down to two options:

Kitchensid Artisan 5KSM125BMH

Kenwood K-mix KMX750AB

Both are equal in price.

Whichever I choose it will be used daily. My current (now dearly departed!) mixer did not have a splash guard which I think is an essential to me now with the amount of buttercream I make!

Please help me decide! This is a significant purchase that I do not want to regret!

I love my kitchenaid. Its a thing of beauty and makes me happy every time I see it.

I'm clearly shallow because I don't care if there are better mixers out there.

Whichever one you go for, it's going to be in your worktop all the time so I'd go for the one you like the look of most.

Love my Kitchenaid, but it was expensive and it is heavy, so if you need to move it on a regular basis factor that in (I have to lug it in and out of a cupboard, which is annoying).

But it looks gorgeous, works brilliantly and is pretty quiet, even on full speed.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 09/09/2021 10:07

Not very helpful but I love my kitchenaid and my Aunt loves her k-mix. I don't think you can go wrong with either so I'd perhaps see which you can get the best deal on.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 09/09/2021 10:12

I also adore my KitchenAid! It's truly a thing of beauty in my kitchen.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2021 10:12

Do you realise that a salary sacrifice scheme will affect your pension? Is it worth it for a mixer.

MrsWooster · 09/09/2021 10:13

I love my ‘antique’ Kenwood Chef.

Thunderpunt · 09/09/2021 10:15

I've always had the Kenwood ones, I've currently got the Prospero 5 in 1 - when I was looking it was the machine with the biggest bowl so that swung it.

GlamGiraffe · 09/09/2021 10:17

Had a kenwood chef (was my mum's then mine). It broke after 28 years. I was dazzled by the beauty of the kitchen aid.
Kenwood was much better. If i was buying again I'd go for another kenwood hands down.

The problem with this question is people either have a Kitchen Aid or a Kenwood, and as they last for ever, never try the other make so a true comparison is hard to get. I have a Kenwood Chef, it always works well and when the children were still at home was used daily. Can’t imagine making bread by hand, and during the first lockdown had great fun with the pasta attachment.

One thing I would say is that spares are easy to get for Kenwoods, I have no idea if it’s the same for Kitchen Aids. So I’d go for the one you like the look of, or the best deal.

Molecule · 09/09/2021 10:19

@GlamGiraffe disproves my point!

PersonaNonGarter · 09/09/2021 10:20

I have a kitchenaid and while it is ok, the parts don’t go in the dishwasher. It’s such a design flaw and so annoying.

LMW1990 · 09/09/2021 10:22

Thanks all

I went for the Kenwood in the end. Now excited for it to arrive!!

I bought the K-mix, even though I love the look of the Kichenaid. It has a much better motor, and the functionality is more important than the looks.

Though I did pay extra for the rose gold one. I'm actually quite shallow.

ChessieFL · 09/09/2021 10:42

I went for the K-mix, because it was cheaper and Which magazine rated it as a bit better than the Kitchenaid. I haven’t been disappointed.

ClaudiaWankleman · 09/09/2021 11:04

A one off £400 salary sacrifice is highly unlikely to significantly affect a pension, and definitely not in the long term.

TonTonMacoute · 09/09/2021 11:09

Neither.

Kenwood Chef and blender - cheaper than both but you get a blender too. I have a 20 year old Kenwood Major (as it was called then) and wouldn't be without it.

However, I see you have already decided.

This. My K-Mix broke within 2 years of light usage, my MIL's old 70's Kenwood is still going strong and in constant use.

Interestingly, Bake Off swapped to K-Mix for a season but were back with Kitchenaid the year after. Whether it was reliability or marketing I don't know.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/09/2021 11:55

My kids clubbed together and bought me K-mix for my 50th this year. I absolutely love it. My gran, who was a really keen baker, always had a Kenwood.

wonkylegs · 09/09/2021 11:59

I love my red KMix but the glass bowl is crap (bowl is good but seal is a real weakness) so make sure you get the SS bowl - I now have both but only really use the SS one

mocktail · 09/09/2021 19:00

I agree the plastic ring on the bottom of the glass bowl is crap. It feels a lot of money to buy the stainless steel bowl as well though.

clara443 · 09/09/2021 19:04

Which bits of the kitchen aid can't go in the dishwasher? mine have all been going in for years.
