Where would you go for a three day weekend with a 13yo?

DD has an inset day in early Oct which gives us a 3 day weekend so I’m trying to think of somewhere to go to make up a bit for the lack of a summer holiday.

I’m thinking East of England / midlands / south east so that we don’t have to travel too far. I love a beach, but as the weather is unpredictable, would rather go somewhere where there is something to do if it rains.

What can you suggest?

So started looking at Birmingham, although now I’m thinking we need a week & not 3 days!

Where would you base your selves to make the most of the city centre & maybe Stratford on Avon?

If you want to stay in S-u-A it's close to the motorways to get anywhere else! Same with Birmingham

Trains run twice an hour between Birmingham moor street (by the back of the world's biggest Primark and the Bull ring shopping centre) and Stratford, so if you stay in Stratford it's easy to get the train to bham and vice versa.

Do NOT stay in a hotel on the Hagley road. They're cheap fro a reason.

DD13 loved Stratford. Recommendations would be to stay at the Hotel Indigo, a guided Shakespeare tour and the boat trip.

Love this. Reminds me of the hotel I booked close to the train station in Munich. Right in the middle of the red light district!

Good tip though. Thinking I might book S o A and then we can go into Brum too.

We recently did Stratford upon Avon for a couple of days, and then a day at Warwick castle. I enjoyed it, as did my teenagers.

Stratford and Warwick Castle is a good combination but whilst Stratford is without doubt worth a visit I'm always slightly let down by it.

Chester is beautiful, with the rows and the the roman aspects of the city. You could get a ferry across the mersy and go to the docks, beatles musuem as well.

Last year - pre pandemic- did two separate trips for 3 days with teenagers one to Stratford and one to York. Both went really well. Stayed in YHA hostels both times which were great.
