As above really..!

Just finally sat down after running around all day and heard an almighty crack and bang. Ran upstairs to see what it was and the shower door has literally shattered into thousands of tiny pieces but it's all mainly in place.
No idea what caused it?! The kids are out, it's just me in the house.
Thank goodness no one was using it - it's the main bathroom that the kids use 😫
Bloody hell how am I going to explain that to my (difficult) landlord
Anyone had this happen before ??

I once had a heatproof jug shatter when I picked it up to put it away. The pieces, which were sharp, flew everywhere and I was lucky none hit my face/ eyes.

I was in the shower when one of the doors shattered. I managed to get several chunks of glass embedded in my arm and later required surgery to remove them. I also slipped on the wet floor and stumbled into the pile of glass which left me with numerous cuts and glass stuck in my feet.

DH looked at the remaining shower door after the accident and the doors had been fitted incorrectly by the previous owners which is probably what led to one of them shattering.

Update: landlord has spoken to someone in the glass trade Hmm who has said it's clear that the door had been slammed with force multiple times which must have caused the shattering.

I just KNEW this would happen.

this happened to our microwave glass turntable ,so weird
could you ask for a second opinion from another glass person, or i think hes going to screw you over

JovialNickname · 07/09/2021 20:56

Thank you for not making this a woo thread!

So you'll be paying for it then!

What a fucking bell end.

Speak to someone in the glass trade who can confirm that your LL is a bell.

I had a landlady like that once, she was an awful woman. Only endured her for a year.

Some people shouldn't be LL's.

greyspottedgoose · 07/09/2021 21:46

Ask the landlord if his friend in the glass trade would like to come and have a look as that's quite an assumption 😂

HurryUpAndWait23 · 08/09/2021 07:10

OP as mentioned above, I had the same and I just remembered that my kitchen was falling apart.
It was a 'new build' that by the time I had it was more like 7-8 Yeats old.
The cupboard doors began to fall off.

She said it was because I was slamming them shut all the time.

Who slams cupboard doors shut?!
If I'm pissed off, I might slam a door but a cupboard door?!

She was an awful bastard. I was scared to contact her about anything

No: it's nickel sulphide inclusion. We have glass doors and partitioning at work. Over the years, a number of doors and glass panels have just gone, usually overnight with temperature fluctuations. It's been really warm during the day and significantly colder overnight the last couple of days.

The landlord's mate in the trade is possibly on the hook to replace the door so is shifting blame. I've got a report somewhere at work that might be helpful, will see if I can find it.

UseOfWeapons · 08/09/2021 07:28

This happened to me about 3 years ago. Sitting downstairs, big noise like a ton of gravel had been dumped on the floor. Went upstairs, shower door in a million pieces.
Cleared up, and rang handyman. He replaced it with a plastic door. The other shower door still in situ. There was no slamming, no wrenching, no drama. I googled it, and found it was fairly common, although I feel a little apprehensive when I sit on the loo next to the remaining door!
Your LL is taking out of his arse, and wants you to pay for it.

whosthathowsthat · 08/09/2021 16:14

Thanks @WeAreTheHeroes apparently it's £600 for a replacement that the landlord wants me to cough up Hmm

OP posts:
WeAreTheHeroes · 08/09/2021 16:25

For starters, he should be insured and is his excess £600?

gunnersgold · 08/09/2021 16:37

They do that if the runner broke and it fell ( you might not have noticed)

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/09/2021 16:38

Can you contact someone yourself, explain what happened and get a quote for replacement? If you can get them to put in writing in an email that toughened glass can and does shatter that like for reasons nothing to do with misuse that would be helpful. In the meantime, would a telescopic shower curtain rail and cheap curtain work to make the shower usable? I can't find the report I thought I had, sorry.

Sparklfairy · 08/09/2021 17:08

My landlord told me that everything inside the property is his responsibility and everything outside is yours. He's trying to suggest damage for this reason.

Get your own quote and clarification that it wasn't your fault, but I suspect you'll have a fight on your hands.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 08/09/2021 17:38

Throw the book at him.

I'm pretty sure shower doors that don't close shatter too, you know the type that just sits on the shower side.

To be honest its up to his insurance company to decide whether it is a reasonable claim. He has to contact them.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 08/09/2021 18:01

If you use google scholar and search for "spontaneous shattering of toughened glass" there's hundreds of research paper hits, all saying it happens.

And I'm pretty sure this is exactly what his insurance is for...

£600 ? For a shower screen ? He's been well had.
