Do you use ortho-k contact lenses? What do you think of them?

I'm badly short-sighted and now i also need glasses to read. Im wondering whether ortho-k might be the answer. If you use them, do you recommend them?

Im nearly 50, in case she matters.

In case it matters. Silly phone!

I think they are amazing... I would get them in an instance for my children if they need them. Unfortunately my astigmatism was over the limit of what they could address... and I think it gets complicated in terms of near and far sightedness as you age.

My husband has had them for a few years & loves them! No issues with them at all and means he can see during the day without anything. Long term he’s still thinking about having surgery but this works in the meantime!

OP what's your prescription?
No, they can't do long and short, but I've done them as a monovision.
As you get older they work less well as your cornea gets a bit more rigid.
I find the new J&J varifocal contact lenses pretty good - have you tried those?

TR888 · 06/09/2021 09:04

My prescription is -7.50 / -6.50 for shortsightedness and 1.50 for presbicia.

Thanks!

I haven't tried varifocal lenses, no. My optician felt I was probably too shortsighted for them.

Don’t know about the lens, but I had blended vision eye surgery (LASIK) last year.

I was -7 in both eyes, with astigmatism and my presbyopia was +1. I don’t wear glasses at all now and it has been pretty life changing. Maybe worth exploring?

TR888 · 06/09/2021 09:36

I'm so tempted about surgery... but won't you need reading glasses in the future, as you age? Or are you fixed for good now?

@TR888 I suspect I will need reading glasses in the future, but I am ok with that to be honest. They don’t promise a time scale I.e. number of years, but hopefully will be 5/6. For the moment though it’s wonderful

TR888 · 06/09/2021 13:36

Thanks for that. I'm so very tempted! May I ask how much you paid for your surgery? No worries if you'd rather not say.
