calling the MNers who have houses on public footpaths

I remember the MNer who has to regularly explain to people that the table and chair in her garden are for her and that they are on a right of way and it's not a park. Today I was walking the Pembrokeshire coastal path and had to go through a farmyard which was on the path but only as a right of way. There was a family laying their picnic out on the table in the garden telling the owner that they wouldn't be long and it was a lovely view and they needed a rest. I wanted to hang around hoping that the owner would throw a bucket of water over them but DH was embarrassed by my interest

So even after being told it was private they weren’t apologetic & packing up?
How are some people so unabashed?!

I know I know - there was a whole thread years ago from some poor woman who has to live with this on a daily basis. I would never buy a house on a public right of way

Where I lived years ago, I had a path right through my garden, past the front of the house, but everyone who used it was very well-behaved. No picnics, no rubberneckers trying to see in the windows. I think people actually felt a bit awkward going through the garden, so tended to go through quickly and quietly.

I don’t, but we gave a lovely path that goes through our neighborhood. Without fail, every single house that lines the path has installed a fence.

I sometimes walk on a well sign posted path that cuts across a small back garden with a swimming pool in it. It feels really really odd.

I was following a bridle path on a map and it goes through this massive house driveway before cutting down the side of the house. Felt super awkward….

How do people have the balls to just set up a picnic in someone’s garden you’ve not paid to go in ie national trust I don’t understand.

ShipshapeShore · 05/09/2021 20:31

I'm the opposite. My family have a caravan and we can walk to the beach on a footpath that cuts through a farmyard right by the house. I can never get through fast enough!

I grew up on a farm. If DH wants to do through a yard on an actual right of way, I generally refuse as I don't like it. Been known to yell "geroff my land"...

BarbaraofSeville · 05/09/2021 20:35

If this thread does attract anyone who has a public footpath going through their land can I please ask that the path is signed clearly?

I go walking a lot and signage is very variable. I don't want to trespass into people's gardens, farmyards etc but often the route of the path through/round the property is far from clear so it's not easy to stay on the path.

My friend does, absolute nightmare. The daily guaranteed annoyance is people letting their dogs crap on her drive and lawns and not picking it up. She's had a few proper CF moments over the years though from picnics on her garden furniture to a family pond dipping in her goldfish pond and people helping themselves to bagfuls of fruit from her trees and bushes.
