Planning to have a little holiday in East Anglia - 5 days late September. I have never been to that part of England and would love some recommendations. For me Cambridge is a must, probably Norwich, Sutton Hoo. Where to stay etc. Help, please!

Our road network is not wonderful, you may be surprised how long it takes from point A to point B. Part of the charm really!

If you're planning on a beach day,
Southwold is lovely and has something for all of the family. Aldeburgh is also very nice, but it has a pebble beach so perhaps less appealing for younger childre.

The cost of parking in Cambridge is extortionate so you'll probably be better off using the Park&Ride depending on your group size. Alternatively, the main train station is a perhaps a 20 - 25 minute to the town centre so not too far at all.

Have a great trip! Smile

Norwich and Cambridge are both lovely. Agree with PP about parking in Cambridge.
Ixworth House.
Holkham Hall
Flatford and Dedham (John Constable)
Adnam's brewery at Southwold
Framlingham Castle
If churches are your thing, Long Melford and the other wool churches
If you like birdwatching, Minsmere.
If you like horses, the Suffolk Punch Trust at Hollesley ('Hoesley')

I haven't been to Sutton Hoo for years, but the last time I went the display was a bit crap. It used to be really good.

I second Dedham... Lovely little village.

Sutton Hoo has been revamped, heard it’s great.

Norwich is a lovely city with fab museums and indie shops.

North Norfolk feels remote and has great beaches - holme, bran caster wells. And some chi chi towns - burnham market, Holt.

Sutton Hoo has had a make over
Visit first, then watch the movie

Ramsholt pub for lunch or Unruly Pig if you have a bigger budget
Recommend booking first
Can walk from Ramsholt pub, along beach, up to church & round in a circle to pub

Orford
Aldeburgh
Dunwich fish & chips at beach cafe
Walberswick crabbing & water ferry to Southwold or vica versa

EasyZ1ip216 · 05/09/2021 22:18

Ramsholt pub is also in a movie

The was a recent thread on holidaying in Suffolk, which had loads of useful stuff.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4306561-off-to-suffolk-for-our-holidays-best-tips-gratefully-received
No one has mentioned Bury St Edmunds or Lavenham yet. Lavenham in particular has lots of timber framed medieval houses and another fabulous Cloth (aka wool) Church and the Guild Hall. BSE has a lovely Abbey and Gardens, and Ickworth is worth a visit.
The re-vamped Sutton Hoo is fabulous.
I'll just re-iterate Park and Ride all the way in Cambridge........ ( and Ipswich and Colchester)

I've just looked at that Suffolk thread and it's full of good ideas.

One is to go on a barge trip out of Ipswich. I can thoroughly recommend the S.B. Victor. If it's still the same skipper, he'll let you have a go on the helm if you ask nicely.

If you are based in Cambridge or west Suffolk then heading for the coast will mean a lot of time in the car. I would stick to Bury, Ely, Constable country and Two days in Cambridge and then do the coast another time.
