Suggestions to alter these rings.

My engagement and wedding ring are now too small after having a few operations on that hand/arm.
Engagement ring is a size K and is a solitaire.
Wedding ring is a size L has a slight pattern.
I now need a size O, I've been told that they cannot be enlarged more than 2 sizes.
They don't fit our daughter or Dil. We have 3 DGDs so cannot split.

It seems a shame to leave in my jewel box. Can anyone suggest on what I can do or have made.
I do NOT want to sell. I have had these rings for over 40 years and still mean a lot to me.

I don’t know whether something along the same lines is possible, but DH ‘s ring was a bit small and wearing thin. He had it remodelled using gold from a ring that his father had left him. Do you have a ring that could be used in a similar way?

Rings can be upsized more than that but would need an insert, not stretching. I did both of mine in a jewellery making evening class.

So you need to find a jewellery maker, not a shop. They can be reluctant if there are stones, as they have to apply quite a lot of heat. But have a chat with one or two, see what they say.

Look up Jeremy Heber. He’s based in Bristol but has a great website and responds to emails really quickly. He’s a jeweller who just works for himself. I’m sure he’ll be able to help you.

Wear them on a chain round your neck and get new ones for your hand.

How about getting the stones reset using the existing gold? Have you got an independent jeweller near you, they’ll have a goldsmith. It needn’t cost the earth either.
I just had my grandmothers rings reset as the setting was too high and the bands far too small.

Either get them remodelled or wear them on a necklace and buy bigger ones. Resizing never works well. What will you do if the jeweller cracks the mount on your precious solitaire when he bends it? A jeweller once resized my ring and tried to give it back to me with a crack in the metal, because he’d bent it too far and couldn’t fix it - he was hoping I wouldn’t notice. If you love the rings then don’t risk resizing.

I’m thinking of having mine melted down and made into new rings, it isn’t actually that expensive, if you’re supplying the materials.

I had my Victorian engagement ring resized from a K to an R (long story). Don't know how they did it but 22 years later it's still fine.

Hoorayhenryyah · 05/09/2021 16:18

I would get a second opinion, if the solitaire has a plain band they should be able to size it by adding a piece or a part shank in. With regards to the wedding band, the same, if it has no stones it should be able to be sized by adding gold in. You might have a small section which doesn’t have the pattern if they can’t replicate it but you can always have that part towards the palm of your hand so it isn’t noticeable

Yup.. as above.. find an independent jeweller who does the work themselves.. I have just had a new diamond, a new setting and a new section on my e engagement ring, basically they have remade the ring using some of the gold from the last one!!

RosesAndHellebores · 05/09/2021 16:29

My wedding, engagement and eternity rings have all been resized by the jeweller we bought them from. Wedding ring had some pattern added. They did say that if my engagement ring required another repair (I wear it all the time and it has had the occasional broken claw and over the years have lost one diamond and the sapphire fell out!) it would need to be completely reset.

Looking forward to fun and games as wedding ring recently had to be cut off and not sure what we will be able to do.

Rings 31 years old.

Louise Wade is a great jeweler, and can remodel existing pieces, she is based in London, googling her with find her details.

IndieTara · 05/09/2021 17:03

I had a ring resized last year, it was made 6 sizes bigger by adding in more gold. It was my mums who had very small fingers and is a gorgeous ring with a huge single stone.
The jeweller did a fantastic job
