Where are they coming from? If they are only upstairs I suspect you may have something dead in your loft. We had loads in the lounge, which has an open fire and found it was due to two dead birds in the chimney.

You really need to find the source. I get loads in my kitchen if I leave the dog food uncovered, once it’s covered they tend to disappear.

Are you rural? Crop/ grass cutting sends the cluster flies off. We always notice an horrific increase.

Meant to add, we've had success with Foggers (the ones you light, not aerosol ones)

goose1964 · 05/09/2021 14:06

This year they've not been as bad but last year we had herds of them. The big waste disposal centre was covered in flies and they got everywhere

Katshouldnotswim · 05/09/2021 14:06

We get cluster flies too.

There is no way we could seal every tiny crack in the roof space so we just live with them.

Grateful for any useful tips

I ordered fly papers from Amazon.

16 in total but have have only hung up 4.

One has no flies. One has a couple including the one I ‘chased’! One has a a fair few and one is covered in them!

I still have 2 or 3 flies but the fly papers or at least one of them seems to be the best method!

Disposing of them is going to be grim as just looking at the one that’s attracted the most makes me heave.

I’m calling them house flies simply because they are in the house! I have no idea if that’s what they are as when I googled different types looked very similar to me!

I got the sticky flower things that you stick to the windows. Brilliant. The kitchen one had a dozen flies stuck to it within a day, and the lounge one had half a dozen. I didn't see anything flying around after that. And they're not as hideously horrible to look at as traditional fly papers.
