Teachers: would you encourage your own children to become teachers?

Why/why not?

I would personally try to discourage mine, the same way my parents tried to discourage me. I did it anyway!

Neither of mine have the temperament for it, so no.
The pointless paperwork, the micromanaging, the constant scrutiny and lack of respect for experience...I did it for years and am now a happy supply teacher.

No, definitely not. Too many hours for too little financial reward. I could definitely have done something else with my degree that pays better and so could dh. In fact his mum was a primary teacher and she tried to put him off and he did it anyway. We’ve both been teaching 16 years now so too late to get out, but I’d definitely encourage our dc to choose a different route.
