Induction hob - what do I need to know?

Recently separated, skint and my freestanding electric cooker died. My lovely Dad bought me a new cooker from his local Hotpoint factory shop where things, are sold cheap cos of small damage etc.
I came home from work late last night o find its an induction hob. I've only ever had standard electric before. What do I need to know about cooking/using one? Can anyone share some hints and tips fir cooking on one. Cooking a roast later today.

I've done the magnet test and about 50% of my pans are suitable so I will need to buy a couple more.

I lived our induction hob! Then we moved and have a gas but I'm going to change it to induction again one day. Things heat up very quickly - more so than gas I found (and assuming electric too). Takes quite a while for my water to boil once I had something to the pan currently but with induction happened in seconds using the booster button if you have one. No particular tips apart from yes you'll need certain pans.

Loved* that was meant to say

The oven is no different so your roast should be ok. You do need to run the oven empty once as it will burn off the smelly manufacturing residue.

I love my induction, so fast! So accurate!

You will love it compared to normal electric - so much quicker & more responsive. So the minute you turn it up / down the heat adjusts.

Be careful with the highest setting - we ruined a couple of pans early on. It’s only really suitable for boiling water.

Love our induction, as responsive as gas but so much quicker to clean!

Fastforwardtospring · 05/09/2021 08:01

Love my induction but it’s down to the quality of the pans, so even though the pans you have may appear suitable if they don’t heat quick it may be the magnetic force is not quite enough and you need a better quality. I have a supermarket set sold for induction, these are rubbish against the recommended set. Have compared using together believe me it makes a big difference, some of the criticism induction gets (on MN) is because induction is slow to heat, I’m absolutely convinced this is down to the pan quality. It’s called the knock on effect - get something new only to find out you need to something else to get it working😬

Love our induction oven. So easy to wipe clean the top. We did buy good quality induction pans abc wok, worth the money.

UrgentHelpforFriend · 05/09/2021 08:09

@Fastforwardtospring

What is the recommend set

Lsjdjfjdh · 05/09/2021 08:15

We got our pans from Dunelm and had no problems and they were very quick to heat.

Fastforwardtospring · 05/09/2021 08:21

@UrgentHelpforFriend we have a Siemens induction so went with their recommendation, cat no HZ390042, actually see this set come up under different manufacturers recommendations.

Phineyj · 05/09/2021 08:23

Have used one a couple of times in holiday houses and found them quite baffling, but as you have the instruction book presumably, read it carefully!

UrgentHelpforFriend · 05/09/2021 08:24

Fast thank you (just bought our first induction)

Agadorsparticus · 05/09/2021 08:30

They are exactly the same as a ceramic hob for usability. They are faster to heat and more responsive to heat change.

SummerOfComedy · 05/09/2021 08:42

I've had one for around 6 months now. I'm still getting used to it. Easy to use and looks great.

After I'd been using it for a few weeks,I noticed that there were terrible marks on one of the rings. They looked awful and I thought if this looks like this now, how's it going to look a year or so down the road?
I recommend a bottle of cream cleaner specially for the hob-Vitro Care Cleaner.
Took the marks right off and looks like new again.

I also bought a 'whistling' hob kettle. It's faster than the electric one.
🙂

We switched from electric to induction hob and I was unprepared for how fast stuff cooks! It took a while to get used to it.

I'd second what people say about the quality of Pans. I've got a couple of pans that are slower than others even though they are compatible. Ikea pans work well. I've got a set of Tefal Ingenio for induction which are brilliant.

Autumnally · 05/09/2021 08:50

We have those pans mentioned by @Fastforwardtospring; came free with our Neff hob (Siemens and Neff owned by same parent company). I agree they are excellent. Other cheaper pans are not always so good.

clarrylove · 05/09/2021 08:57

Agree about the pans. I bought a Salter pan, which I live but I'd doesn't work well on the hob. Also remember no-one with a pacemaker can go near it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/09/2021 08:58

I got a new cooker this year , went for the induction hob rather than the ceramic .

It does heat up so much quicker Grin
Only one of my current pans ( a Costco frying pan) failed the magnet test . I was idly looking at some new ones in Costco but they weren't suitable ....sadly put them back on the shelf .

I have a mix of Prestidge pressure cooker , couple of QVC pans , Brabantia frying pan, couple of random milkpans from Dunelm.

No real difference bewteen them .

If I move the pan or even lift slightly to stir it sets the beep beep off but I got used to that

Oldraver · 05/09/2021 09:20

I don't know if it's just ours that this happened to so.....

Ours is a frameless one and we had those glass worktop saves ( that always loose the blummin rubbery feet eventually) and we knocked it into the side of the job and it chipped

I'm not sure if it was because it was glass in glass if just this make

Caspianberg · 05/09/2021 11:13

The IKEA 360 pans are pretty good and work on induction well

Nonbio46 · 05/09/2021 14:52

I love my induction hob . I had to buy new pans and I got them from Sainsbury’s, they’re fab. I also bought some bamboo protective covers which double up as extra worktop space when I’m not using the hob.

Mydogisagentleman · 05/09/2021 15:40

We’ve had ours for about a month now.
I absolutely adore it. Quicker than the old gas one and much easier to keep clean
