What do the letters art on a blood pressure cuff mean?

Apologies for dark photo but does anyone know what the meaning of art is on the cuff? Is it supposed to line up with an artery or something ? I’ve googled but can’t find anything and the print in the instruction book is so small I can’t read it. TIA

Artery- the line and letters should line up with the brachial artery

dryasaboner · 04/09/2021 21:18

The brachial is the main artery that runs though the inside of the arm- the cable should point downwards and be pretty much lined up with it

Oh that’s great thank you so much. So the circle with art above it should line up with the artery (which I’ll now try find ). My GP advised me to get a home monitor but I want to be sure I’m using it correctly.

Yeah vaguely doesn't have to be too exact just make sure the cable follows the inside of your arm

stripedbananas · 04/09/2021 22:51

Yes the cuff goes on your upper arm just above where your elbow bends and the arrow on the inside of the bend as it were. So any arrow etc would point there. This is also where they would listen manually with a stethoscope

stripedbananas · 04/09/2021 22:51

It doesn't have to be that accurate if it's not manual tbh

If you bend your arm and place 2 fingers gently on the on the fold you should feel it. Move across slowly from left to right

Excellent. Thank you so much. Next task - new reading glasses.

I found this thread because I have the same question - but I don't think it has been answered here. From what I can gather everyone is talking about lining up the air pipe/arrow with the brachial - that's good sound advice, but the question was what is the meaning of ART on the cuff ?. On my cuff it's more than an inch to the right of the directional 'arrow' and air pipe - so I'm also curious what ART and 'the dot' mean. 😀

Hi all, I have the Omron X2 BP monitor and just called them about this lack of clarity. They are updating the not very helpful manual but politely explained and thanked me for my feedback. So...

  1. Their diagram clearly shows the air tube lined up with the downward-pointing arrow marker placed centrally on the LEFT arm in line with the brachial artery. Correct position for the left arm reading.
  2. They say the black circle to the right of this, near the word ART (meaning brachial artery) is intended for RIGHT arm measurements. So the circle needs to be central on that arm in line with the main artery, unlike the air tube. Some folk only have a right arm option, sadly. Personally I check both arms even though you will get slightly discrepant readings for various medical reasons.

Hope this helps...

Clarifier1 · 13/02/2025 14:06

For discrepant read different. The monitor is fine but the arms vary.

I would like to add, for further clarity, that my Omron X2 instructions are very clear on the points of keeping the air flow tube straight and not coiled during a reading, and taking a reading at least 12 inches away from a strong electromagnetic field like a phone or PC as this can distort results. Always use decent batteries too. My Omron came with Duracells which do at least have longevity. I also take 3 readings on each arm and calculate an average for each.
