Best supermarket delivery for availability of goods?

Which should I go for?! I don't like getting substitutions so it's always a gamble buying from the supermarkets that pick from the shelves. I've had fewer subs from Ocado but have the other services got better?! Physically I shop at Tesco and Aldi.

Please help me choose who to buy a pass with!!

I get Ocado and Waitrose, Ocado have least subs/missing items, but the fruit and veg from Waitrose are better quality. My neighbour uses Sainsbury’s and has recently been complaining about the large number of subs/missing items on every shop.

MyOtherProfile · 04/09/2021 09:55

Tesco have been brilliant for us. So long as you remember to tick the allow substitutes box. When they do have to substitute it's usually almost the same item.

Mischance · 04/09/2021 09:57

I use Tesco, mainly because they have a system whereby you can add a note to each item - e.g. this is needed for 28th, please check eat-by date.

Not many subs - and occasionally they are much to my financial advantage!

RhubarbCrumbled · 04/09/2021 10:12

Those who use Tesco, do you live close to a very large store or is it a small town size?

Ocado, the delivery comes from a warehouse rather than a store so more likely to have stock.
We rarely get subs and if we do it’s just one or two things

They don't deliver from the one closest to you. We have a large Tesco in the next village but our delivery comes from one further away. They have one main Tesco in an area that handles deliveries.
INeedNewShoes · 04/09/2021 10:18

In my experience Ocado are infinitely more reliable re stock levels and also are very very rarely late (sometimes early but they tend to phone before they arrive if they’re early).

Every time I shop elsewhere I wish I’d shopped at Ocado.

Last week I had multiple missing items from Waitrose, only some sensibly subbed and they were a bit late.

Scramblinghealingdreaming · 04/09/2021 10:18

Ocado without a doubt as they use the most accurate stock control systems - driven by the fact everything comes from a warehouse and others won't have taken the goods off the shelves.

That said they are smaller than Tesco so maybe not as much buying power / clout when baggsying limited stock in the country for their customers.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 04/09/2021 10:21

We've found Tesco really good, like another poster says it's usually a very similar substitution and also you can opt out on anything you don't want substituted. Our Tesco delivery comes from a warehouse even hough we have a medium store not that far away. We have used Ocado previously and they were good too.

Bazookapie · 04/09/2021 10:37

Another vote for Tesco, shopped with them for ages and have very few substitutions. If it does happen very sensible alternatives have been offered and items can be handed back to the driver for refund if unsuitable (I’ve never needed to do that).
Our deliveries come direct from a warehouse rather than a store, could make a difference.

MotherWilliam · 04/09/2021 10:38

No complaints about Tesco from me. Yes, the odd substitution, but invariably something equal or better - and you can always refuse it on delivery.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 04/09/2021 10:47

Morrisons for me - in my area the shopping is picked at a warehouse and not a store.

Its very, very rare that I get a sub.

Ifailed · 04/09/2021 10:49

Given the current shortage of HGV drivers, I'd expect a better availability from an on-line grocer that use large picking centres (dark stores). For most of us that would be Ocado or Tesco, depending on location.

AntiHop · 04/09/2021 10:51

I've had no problems with Sainsbury's. Some substitutions, but not every time and not many.

H1978 · 04/09/2021 10:53

I would agree that Tesco is one of the best, especially when you get a superior item for the lower price. Not sure where it comes from but we have a Tesco Extra 7 minutes walk from us.

PumpkinKlNG · 04/09/2021 10:55

Tesco’s have been good for us but I live near a dot com store (warehouse) so that will make a different

Racingadmin · 04/09/2021 11:15

Tesco are good for us .

We buy the delivery saver pass using clubcard vouchers so it only costs 1/3 of the actual price in vouchers

MiloAndEddie · 04/09/2021 12:40

Morrison’s definitely if it’s coming from the warehouse rather than a store. Been shopping weekly with them for about 4 years and could count on one hand the number of subs we’ve had

insancerre · 04/09/2021 12:44

I use Tesco at home and have hardly had any substitutions
I use Asda at work and often things are not available like bin liners
I prefer Tesco

icelollycraving · 04/09/2021 12:47

Ocado. I shop with them for all big shops, maybe one or two subs out of a long list. Easy to get refund too if things aren’t as expected, split packaging/squashed etc. They also add the same promotional discount to items subbed.

Pokhora · 04/09/2021 13:07

I use tesco and ocado and have found tesco far better for subs. Ocado seems to have loads of subs (generally 3 to 5 per shop) and are more expensive and generally inappropriate. With tesco subs are fewer and are generally a more expensive item for the same price.

TwinkleToeMatilda · 04/09/2021 13:53

Tesco all the way. I used to use Asda and the amount of subs that were polar opposite to what I ordered was ridiculous. Tesco is slightly more pricey but it’s worth it when you get what you actually ordered.

OxanaVorontsova · 04/09/2021 14:00

It must be regional, I rarely get subs at Ocado but frequently at Sainsbury’s and Tesco

RhubarbCrumbled · 05/09/2021 09:04

So it does seem to depend on whether you get deliveries from store or warehouse with warehouse being more reliable for less subs. I'll give Tesco a go for a few weeks and see how it goes.

I’ve used Tesco for years but I am finding the selection difficult at the moment. Online is saying some of my usual items are not available.

As an example last week, I couldn’t get skinless chicken thighs so I just went with ones with skin and bone on. When the guy arrived he said your thighs weren’t available and the sub was what I actually wanted in the first place!

I have used Sainsbury’s a couple of times in recent months where too much was unavailable online with Tesco. I really like that you get an email from them saying what’s not available or has been subbed before they arrive.
