If you could do an online Masters degree, what would you do?

I need to do SOMETHING before the grey cells totally dry up. I have an English Literature degree but don't necessarily want to continue that. I'm old (55). I'm interested in everything.

What would you do?

In the same boat here....Ive looked at everything from archaeology to psychology. There is a degree in Environmental Humanities at Plymouth that looks intetesting but i dont think its online.

If I was going to do something to further mh career, it would be Construction Project Management.

If it were something for me, for the love of it, I would start with a City and Guilds in something textile design related...

AuntieStella · 04/09/2021 07:50

I'm thinking about this, but it might be an uphill struggle to persuade admissions tutors I can still use my brain!

I'd be interested in linguistics (possibly something on cohesive language and communities online). Maybe something in the arch/anth field?

Or a change to a different field, so would start with the massive online courses from the likes of Open Learn and Future Learn

GrandmasCat · 04/09/2021 07:50

If I were to do an online course, I would choose one from the Open University. Amazing resources and decades of experience ensuring students find their programmes engaging when working on their own.

Now, if you decide to go the online route, bear in mind that a normal UG course will require you to study at least 14 hours a week on your own (committing and keeping to that is the difficult thing)

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/09/2021 07:52

I'd be interested in linguistics too @AuntieStella

Professional- palliative care
Personal love - either history of medicine or history of post war America.

Bryonyshcmyony · 04/09/2021 07:53

I have thought about an online diploma in psychology (for those who don't have a psychology first degree) then carrying on with the msc if all goes well.

I did an MA in Applied Linguistics. I loved it and miss it.
I’d like to do a law conversion course next.

I'd do Women's Studies. Really interesting.

Scarby9 · 04/09/2021 08:00

I also have an English Literature degree and went on to do a Psychology PhD. It was in an area connected with my work, but I worked alongside a number of masters students while I was completing my research and some of their projects were fascinating.

Ylvamoon · 04/09/2021 08:05

I would do Philosophy, Religion and Ethics.

MindyStClaire · 04/09/2021 08:06

I have qualifications in maths, physics, finance type stuff but have a fantasy where I take early retirement and do a liberal arts degree very part-time. Lots of different modules in subjects I know nothing about - anthropology, linguistics, history, psychology, sociology. Not even sure if it's possible but I would love it.

WorriedNHSer · 04/09/2021 08:08

You can get a student loan to study a second undergraduate degree as long as it’s part time and a STEM subject. Just in case that’s of interest to any of you.

(We really wanted a new board - but are making do with a thread, for now.)

My dd is doing this as her first degree. It looks so interesting

I did one in HR for my career.

For fun, I’d like to do one in either Linguistics or Organisational Psychology.

Capricornandproud · 04/09/2021 08:14

I would highly recommend my Masters in Philanthropic Studies MA with University of Kent. Its online, wonderful unit and and covers areas of work around giving, fundraising, donors, volunteers and studying rich philanthropists! If you were to ever give time to any charity it covers everything. A lot of their courses are online and worth a look.
