I hate my new haircut

Had my hair cut today and I hate it. It’s possibly partly my fault because I could have been more communicative, but also it looked ok whilst still there. The stylist was very sweet but very young and I think she just lacked experience, especially as my hair is curly and unpredictable. I think it’s easily fixable, the layers just need to be a bit more varied, and texture needs to be added, some weight taken out of the front section, right now it just sort of ends in a blunt fluffy edge. What’s the protocol? Do I go back? Do I have to pay for another cut?

Hair grows
Take biotin

It’s not the length, it’s the shape. It’s all wrong for my face

Yes, you can go back and ask for it to be fixed for free. They may offer you a different stylist as well. I'd be really surprised if they didn't. Unless it's one of the really basic barber type places rather than a hair salon.

No it’s a salon I’ve been going to for many years. I didn’t hear on the phone who I had booked with, but she’s fairly junior (the price of the haircut was nice though and she was lovely). My hair can sometimes be a bit tricky and I think she just cut it like straight hair. It’s a little unpredictable and just needs a bit more help, but my concern is it’s probably a bit more than a tweak. And I don’t want her to feel bad either - she was so so lovely, it’s just not sitting right now. That’s the problem with curls, it’s a fine line between looking awesome and looking shit.

They are used to it I think. Especially when they're really junior. It's part of the territory.

I had to go back when a really senior stylist gave me a very unwanted mullet. It was really awkward as her junior had to fix it. But she was really professional about it.

Just don't be rude or nasty about it which it really doesn't sound as if you would.

I think probably, because it’s got a little shorter, it’s sprung up more than she was expecting. So I think she cut what she thought were decent layers into it, but it’s just come out as a rather unbecoming wedge shape.

DH helpfully said ‘oh hi, nice haircut’ and I said ‘thanks I’m actually unsure about it’ and he said ‘oh thank god it’s awful’ Hmm

And yes, would hate for her to feel bad about it. I’ll give them a call and pop in next week some time.

But yes @AlrightThereSkippy if I go too far I’ll end up with a mullet. Must avoid that.

Bless her - we had a really interesting conversation about how much the world has changed in her lifetime: she was born in 2004 🤪

Of course you should go back. Any decent would want you to. It's really not a big deal. Curls can be hard to cut. Good luck

ineedsun · 04/09/2021 09:26

Sorry about your disappointing hair cut but I like the sound of your husband.

Dd1 (age 23) has curley ringlet hair. It has taken us years to find a hairdresser who gets how to cut it. (He has curly hair himself) so for the fix now call salon and say you are unhappy. Long term fix search for a hairdresser who understands curly hair.

Google it there is loads of information about it on the net.

Autumnally · 04/09/2021 19:08

@ineedsun he’s not normally that tactful Grin

Yeah I think I’m going to give them a call on Monday. It’s a little better having been washed again (the salon did not have a curly specific shampoo which didn’t help); but I should be able to describe what I want from them.

Can I ask what curly hair shampoo and conditioner you use please? (And, yes, do ask for a restyle to sort it out!). And also your husband sounds great Grin

I actually use umberto giannini curl jelly wash and care which is not actually curly girl approved but is free from both sulfates and silicones and works really well for my very fine hair which has a loose corkscrew curl. I’ve been using it a couple of years and there has been a definite change in my hair in that time, curls are more defined. I have tried a bunch of other curly girl approved things but I think as some curly hair is much more coarse those products don’t work well for me. And the full CG method doesn’t work at all for me (hair goes greasy too quickly).

Fab! Thank you. I have straight hair but my children have curls so I’m learning all the time!

Autumnally · 04/09/2021 19:59

So there are a bunch of different shampoos. The cantu one is available in sainsburys and is relatively inexpensive, but it doesn’t suit my hair at all (my kids like it though). The big thing for curls is no sulfates, and preferably no silicones. But curls also need a lot of moisture, so some products for curly hair have quite a bit of oil in them, or there is also the trend for using conditioner only - sometimes called ‘no poo’. There will be a bit of trial and error needed possibly. Also with curly hair you should only really comb it when wet (I use a denman brush on mine after the shower). Brushing it when dry makes it more likely to look frizzy and also can make the curl drop.
