Would meds help this kind of anxiety?

I have always struggled a bit but I'm just at the point where I feel a bit overwhelmed at times. Not all the time, but a lot. I struggle with a fear of the future, particularly regarding my children. And also a fear that the future won't come. If that makes sense. I feel like I'm living in a limbo waiting for something awful to happen. And that life is passing me by really quickly while I'm there.

Give them a try OP they’ve helped me enormously with generalised anxiety and panic attacks.. was resistant for years but wish had started them a lot sooner, good luck!

That's good to know, I'm worried I'll be knocked out or something! I feel like I just need some help

Anti depressants take about three weeks to kick in as they build up.

You may have a dry mouth and feel a bit different while they do kick in but it should pass.

And then you won’t notice anything unusual, just that you have a bit more energy and don’t feel so down. I thought they were great.

Do you mind me asking what ones you were on?

Placemarking for my DD.

My counsellor friend recommends the Sertraline (sp) ones. Replaces a natural hormone that some simply don’t produce enough of.

Citalopram. Built up the dosage over a few months. Felt a bit funny the first couple of weeks but nothing severe, I take them in the morning as felt at night time it interfered with my sleep a little bit.. definite improvement after about 4 weeks and haven’t looked back! I consider them the same as any medication for a medical problem and am in no hurry to come off them, maybe not ever!

I agree with you @Annab1983 - you'd seek treatment for any other condition without even thinking about it!

I have health anxiety, and 50mg of sertraline has been life changing. First 3 weeks they made me feel so ill- pregnancy symptoms really.

But after that, it was just like the weight had been lifted- feel normal and wish I had started them sooner

It's worth a try.

SSRIs really are very safe and if you don't get on with them you can just stop.

It's really not as scary or as big of a deal as many people think it is. Just give it a go.

There are lots of different types. Two already mentioned in this thread.

Your doctor will decide which are best for you. As with all meds in the event you’re not happy with how one is working just tell your doctor and he can switch you to another one.

Even within my family for something as simple as indigestion one person swears by tums the other by Rennies and for someone else it’s gaviscon. ie different things suit different people. There will be one that suits you.

It’s totally worth trying. You don’t feel like you’re incapable of working or parenting.

It’s not like whacky baccy or something.

It’s a slow build up of happy chemicals in your body that have been depleted and it just makes you less stressed. You can still mull over things it doesn’t make you dumb or unable to reason or anything scary.

The dry mouth is the most annoying symptom that most people get but if that’s as bad as it gets to feel good then surely it’s worth it. And not everyone gets it. Mine kicked in around 8 or 9 days in I think. I just drank more water. Which is healthy. Sorted.

Citalopram lifted that constant feeling of dread for me. Life changing.

I found a combination of meds and counselling aimed at anxiety the best way to tackle this feeling. It took me a while to find the med that suited me best. I’m not too bad now. I manage my anxiety with the strategies I got from counselling.
