Is it worth calling environmental health?

I've never called them before but I'm beginning to think I should, but will they actually do anything?

I went to a pub with a friend yesterday for lunch. By 7pm I was on the toilet with a bucket as I was having diarrhoea and vomiting both at once. I couldn't keep anything down including water and was still throwing up bile and having stomach spasms at 8am. Now feeling cold, shaky and utterly exhausted but thankfully keeping down fluid.

Just phoned friend and she had the same but we had totally different meals .. which is odd.

Phoned pub to let them know and they basically said it was nothing to do with them and no one else had contacted them with a problem...they were quite short with me to be honest - not convinced they were telling me the full truth.

If friend hadn't also suffered, I'd just assume I'd been unlucky but she had sausage and mash I had fish and chips... we did both have peas but I'd be surprised if it was those Confused

Sounds more likely to be norovirus which is rife and you could have picked up anywhere but from your post you seem to be implying you think it’s food poisoning, is that right?

listsandbudgets · 03/09/2021 17:16

Sorry yes I meant to say I assumed food poisoning... not at my best just now :(

Despite the time of year, there is lots of norovirus about at the moment. It could have come from the pub but it also could be completely unrelated.

Have you and your friend been anywhere else together within the last few days?

It's certainly odd that you both got so ill at the same time...
I don't think contacting environmental health would be overkill, tbh.

listsandbudgets · 03/09/2021 17:24

No not seen each other for 3 weeks. Really odd. If we'd both had same or similar meal I'd be certain it's food poisoning but unless it was peas or the kitchen was simply completely filthy I'm at a loss.

Perhaps you;re right and we both by coincidence got norovirus at same time. All a bit odd

You could have caught norovirus at the pub, possibly from another customer of course

CottonSock · 03/09/2021 17:26

Ring them, they might get other reports too. Even if 'just' noro, maybe the hygiene practices are weak.
They called me once when I tested positive for food poisoning.

Get well soon

GreyhoundG1rl · 03/09/2021 17:29

There might have been a problem with the freezers?

Brownlongearedbat · 03/09/2021 19:00

Honestly, this sounds just like norovirus, especially as you both had different meals. You probably caught it in the pub (did you use the loos?), or did you travel, there on public transport? It is SO infectious. Of course, it could be someone on the pub staff who is passing it on, but equally, it could be another customer, or just anyone you both got close to. Bad luck. Norovirus is virulent at the mo...its making up for lost time.

ThreeLeggedCat · 03/09/2021 19:28

I work in EH and our first question will always be have you been to your GP to get a poo pot and had it sent off. If we get a positive result for one of the foodbourne pathogens then we would investigate further. You had a pretty quick onset time which would indicate noro rather than foodbourne. You’ll probably feel like death warmed up for 24-48 hours but it should pass pretty quickly after that.

cherrypiepie · 03/09/2021 19:55

I did after I contracted a horrendous bug after eating out with my friend.

When I was well enough about 48 hours alter I found out she had had the same bug.

I was so surprised as we literally met there and went selected ways we must have both caught it there even though we had different food.

The EH man was really nice and said he was surprised as that venue was generally no problem or good. He also said it sounded more like noro. I felt horrendous for 48 hours then totally fine.

Hope you get well soon it's awful 😞

listsandbudgets · 03/09/2021 20:18

Thanks all sounds like the consensus is that it's norovirus then.

For some reason, I'm now desperately wanting frazzles and hot sweet tea and I'm incliend to give into both - probably my body demanding more salt and sugar.

Still feeling pretty vile though - hoping its the end of everything falling out of both ends

It might be norovirus or gastroenteritis. I had gastroenteritis and thought it was food poisoning. EH were lovely and very willing to visit the restaurant I went to.

To recover I ate the BRAT diet and it saved me. But if you fancy something go with it. I hope you are soon well

I've had food poisoning once. It came on about 36 hours after I'd eaten one slice of undercooked chicken.

It was diagnosed after a stool sample
It lasted three weeks, so long my gp gave me antibiotic. I have never felt so ill. Waves of pain that went from under my bust to my groin, then three days when I fe!t if they punctured my abdomen id just go off like a baloon that's been punctured.

Not much sickness, lots and lots and lots of loose stools.
What you have really does not sound like food poisoning

Eeiliethya · 03/09/2021 22:04

Do they have a food hygiene rating? What is it? Might say on their website.

That's similar to when I had food poisoning, it was all bottom end and feeling like I was being repeatedly stabbed in the stomach. I'd rather give birth again than go through that again.

I had campylobactor poisoning.
Ill for a long time, and had lot's of paperwork sent through from EH, food diaries, what I'd had different to my family.

Mamainthemaking · 03/09/2021 23:42

I had the same symptoms when I drank a gone off pint. Lesson learnt; don’t drink heavily discounted beer that’s ‘about to’ expire. (It was from a local pub, so I thought I could trust it. 🙄)

Could the alcohol have been the problem?

DogsandCatsB4u · 03/09/2021 23:45

Check the hygiene rating of the pub

alexdgr8 · 03/09/2021 23:49

if not better by monday morning, contact GP and env health.
what was score on the door of pub.
good luck.

SynchroSwimmer · 04/09/2021 00:13

Onset of food poisoning is typically 4 to 6 hrs after ingestion - if memory serves...
