If your child has a nut and shellfish allergy...

what snacks do you give them apart from fruits and veg?

I've been looking through the Facebook groups and it's all very overwhelming.

My dd is nearly 4 and apart from the odd half pack of pom bears and mini cheddars i haven't really given her many yummy things. I did bake some fairy cakes once and she enjoyed them but I would like her to have other yummy snacks too, even if occasionally. I've given her a rich tea biscuit once or twice and that's about it. Since she was diagnosed with allergies this year all the research has left me overwhelmed and drained. I have joined the Facebook groups for nut and shellfish allergies but am not sure if what's on them are any good as snacks for a 4 year old. What ice lollies have you given them? Do you give them oreos or is that no good for a 4 year old? What other yummy nut and shellfish safe snacks do your 4 to 5 year olds have?

TIA

You’re going to have to get used to baking! Good things to make which are yummy and you know will be safe are flapjacks, shortbread biscuits, muffins etc. All of which you can make v quickly once you get in the rhythm. Flapjacks and biscuits are easier to keep than muffins/cakes which can go stale quickly. Nuts are they key thing to watch out for on prepped stuff as they usually have a disclaimer around ‘not prepared in but free space’ etc. My dd2 has a nut allergy but not at the level that’s a problem, so it’s not as bad. Be v v careful eating out as sometimes you can check it’s nut free and then they fail to tell you it’s got almond flour in it! Also chocolate croissants. Tesco are nut free, Sainsbury’s aren’t but generally avoid anything with chocolate spread, many people use Nutella and don’t really appreciate the clue is in the name!

No allergies, but my kids snack on fruit, and homemade cake or biscuits.
We make ice lollies from fruit juice, or fruit pieces in yoghurt in the summer.

There are so many delicious recipes out there. Try Googling sweet tray bakes.

Many can be frozen so that you can do a mammoth baking session, but into portions, wrap and freeze. Brilliant.

Ds has a nut allergy, and he also has issues which make new food really hard for him. So his snacks tend to be fruit and veg sticks. he likes mini cheddars and plain Jacobs crackers spread with butter. he will eat rich teas and adores ginger nuts. I can occaisonally get him to eat those dipper things which are breadsticks with cheese. My main thing I try and do is to make him a chocolate ice cream milkshake almost every day which I out complan in as he needs the calories and the nutrients. He loves plain greek yoghurt so that often makes an appearance.

Oh, and for other things which I was doing in lockdown when WFH - we would have an afternoon snack every day. He loved cinammon toast; little cucumber and butter sandwiches and strawberries. I think he ate cucunber sandwiches and strawberries every day for about 6 weeks. I also like english muffins spread with butter.
