Did having children help you get more organised?

My partner and I (27/28, together 13 years since we were teens) are currently TTC. We are both very ready mentally and financially, we budget well and have savings.

Only issue is I'm really messy. He's better than me but neither of us are where I feel a parent should be. We tend to let things build up and then do a big clean, we like to host friends and family so we always do a big clean before having guests so it doesn't build up TOO much.

I'd say we're not dirty just messy, but I still feel like with a baby around we need to be more diligent. I'd have hoped by the time I was 28 and TTC I'd act less like my teenage self. Did having children force you to get your act together if you were like me? Can I develop better habits or am I gonna be fighting an uphill battle against myself forever??

The homes you see on social media that are spotless with kids are lies.

You will find you probably will become more organised with a baby as in you will know where to put your hand on a soother at 4am.

Maybe have a look at the organised mum method, team tomm. It does actually help to have it broken down.

You sound exactly like me! I've never been good at tidying unless I suddenly realise people are coming round. It's not that I don't want to do the housework more that it doesn't even cross my mind to do it.
I will obviously tidy up after myself if I've made a mess and wash up every day - but general cleaning, nope.
I now have a 2 year old and nothing has changed!
I was actually pretty good at doing it all during the first 9 months of maternity. baby would sit in her rocker and come room to room with me etc. But since she started walking and needing entertaining all day long I've regressed! My poor husband ends up doing most of it at the weekend even though he's been at work all week.
I always have good intentions to do it but just don't!

I mean it really depends just how messy you are? When you have a baby/child to look after an extent of organisation does help for example keeping on top of laundry and making sure bottles are washed and ready for next feed etc. However, as long as you are not filthy you should be fine x

I am a very messy person, and I collect/ gather a lot of "stuff".
Being married and having kids definitely helped.
I know that my husband likes a tidier house- so I make an effort to meet in the middle, as does he. I raised my standards- he lowered his!!

Also- I started to get cross at the amount of time needed for finding stuff etc- no time now with kids, so I can see the benefits.
Being a bit more organised has given me more time.

No. Dc made everything a thousand times worse for me! I felt like I was always running just to stand still.

I highly recommend the blog/podcast a slob comes clean which finally helped me sort out my messiness.

I wished I’d found it before having dc because I was making life unnecessarily hard for myself

KindergartenKop · 03/09/2021 20:26

You do have to be more organised in all areas of your life with DC. You have to clean up the mess of dinner because at 6am when the toddler is starving you can't deal with it. BUT for us, to realise we needed to be more organised there had to be a little crisis first (cat and heap of unsorted laundry, a day I want to forget)

I'd get help prior or work out how to manage better
Children / babies maximise and highlight every issue in your life and being tired, ill crying kids etc soon turn nasty if you're both stressed living in a tip
Need to be in the best place possible before adding lots of work (and new risks!) into your life

No, I've always been fairly tidy and really organised, am the same now. DH has always been messy and unorganised and still is. Neither of us have changed at all in that regard.
