What type of therapy is good?

I need a therapist. I have tried various Counsellors over the past few years and haven’t once found I got anywhere. I talked a lot about things but there never seemed to be any analysis/processing/understanding about why and I didn’t get anywhere.

My friend in the USA has a great therapist but she is unable to see people in the UK due to licensing issues or something similar.

I think maybe I need something more than a counsellor. I have searched on accredited websites and just can’t seem to find the right fit.

This is what I’m looking for:

-to work through my issues and mental health struggles
-Someone to help me make sense of things from my past
-help me understand why I am the way I am
-help me work through traumas from my past that are affecting me today
-strategies to deal with how I feel and react
-becoming more assertive

I am not sure what sort of therapy I need. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Integrative therapy is useful. Look for a therapist who specialises in your area of concern and they will bring together different techniques to help. Mine used a lot of psychodynamic and humanistic techniques which usually wouldn't be used together by a therapist that uses one style.

Hi OP! I am absolutely not going to downplay the importance of having a personal one to one relationship with a therapist at all, I have done it myself and found it immensely beneficial. (If it is useful to know, I found someone by going on the BACP website and putting in my locality and it suggested a practice, which I contacted to ask for an appointment. At my appointment I was assessed and they referred me to the therapist in their team whose expertise best suited my needs.)

Having said that, I would like to recommend to you a book (and an online community which is associated with it). It’s called How To Do The Work by Nicole LaPera. She explores precisely the issues you mention, about your past and how it influences you today and how to process it.

She is on Instagram as the Holistic Psychologist.

I’m not being paid to promote her or anything; this is not an ad! I have just been struck by how very useful her work is, and how accessible it is. Worth a look perhaps?

Good luck in your search, I wish you strength.

You just need to find a psychotherapist not a counsellor.

I’ll look for a psychotherapist.
