Tell me about your experience with studying after having a baby

How long did you wait to proceed with your course? How did you manage to juggle your LO and studies?

I wish to change careers and so I’m considering going back to university to obtain another degree.

I retrained when DD1 was 2.5. The course (PGDE) was v demanding, lectures and tutorials Mon-Fri 9-5 plus extra work to catch up with on evenings and weekends. We made it work, but it was hard. I did find I was more focused and efficient than when I did my undergrad. Partly age/maturity, but also partly because I had to be. It was hard but absolutely worth it. Good luck.

Totally depends on the type of course you’re on e.g. how many hours a week face to face; the support you have/ childcare; and whether you have a high needs/ velcro or easygoing baby.
Is the Open University an option for a year whilst baby is small? You can often then transfer your credits to a similar course at another institution.

I had a baby in the middle of second year and carried on throughout. I only had lectures 2 days a week but it was a full time work load.

I had my first half way though my first year of uni (February half term) i only had one full day of lectures (i think five classes ? )

For the first two weeks i did miss some of my lesson. But i managed about half.

First week hubby came and sat next to me with the baby.

My tutor loved her 🙈

It was a small campus in the dales i dont know how much i would of got away with in a big formal setting.

My amazing tutors ment that i completed my degree though.

I tried to complete an MLitt in the evenings after my first baby (she was about a year old). In the end I left the course. My husband wasn’t around in the evenings or during the day (work) so it was literally whatever I could do in the few hours I had during the weeknights, and I needed so much more study time than I could steal.
