We're heading to haggerston castle in October. We'll have DD with us who will have just turned 3. I'm well versed in haven holidays and have done one this summer so know all about booking things and the new covid systems, so not concerned about that. However, I'm wondering theres anything in the park or nearby that you'd recommend? It's our first visit here since I used to go as a child more years ago than I'd care to count 🙈

Alnwick castle & gardens or head to the coast. There are some amazing beaches in the north east.

Farne Island boat trip and second Alnwick Gardens, Holy Island and Bamburgh beach. Stunning area!

Eyemouth isn't too far away.

I got nits from the horse ridding, not even sure if they still have that but if they do…I would not recommend

Definitely Alnwick garden and castle and sea houses. Also barter books in Alnwick is fab! Craster is lovely too!

madamecake · 01/09/2021 20:44

Most have been mentioned but my favourites…

Farne island boat trip
Seahouses
Bamburgh beach and well worth the few quid to visit inside the castle too.
Alnwick Castle and also Barter Books in Alnwick
Cragside National Trust near Rothbury.

Holy Island is lovely but my and DH enjoyed it a lot more than the DC did.

Thank you everyone!

If you're at Haggerston, take a trip inland
to the Ford & Etal estate. There's a heavy horse centre, Etal castle (ruined, so good for running around and even if you don't go in, there are two cannons in front that my children love climbing over) and either the pub at Etal for lunch (apparently the only
thatched one in Northumberland) or a cafe at Heatherslaw Mill. Heatherslaw to Etal is walkable, with a safe path parallel to the road for most of it, but there's also a little light railway between the two (best to check it's running first) which is a winner for that age and has some stunning views. There's also a little area of the river at Etal where children can paddle at the edge. My family still live up there so we visit often and it's one of my children's favourite places to go when there. You will also find that if it's bad weather at the coast, it's often better inland (and vice versa).
Oh, and presuming you're not going at half term due to DCs age, but if you are, they have an annual scarycrows contest which is fun!

Letsgetquizzy · 11/09/2021 12:25

Oh, and for beaches, Low Newton and Embleton are gorgeous.

Onebabyandamadcat · 11/09/2021 12:44

Thank you! I'll look into all of them. I'm a teacher so its at half term so will look into the scarycrow too - that sounds fun!

The scarycrows are definitely worth a look, in that case - it's a competition between the two villages and visitors get to judge. There are some very creative (and clearly quite competitive!) residents. The train is often Hallow'een themed over half term so you might want to take a dress up costume if you do go. Enjoy - my DC are older now but we'll definitely be there if we make it up at half term.

Another vote here for ford and etal, it's a great day out. There is also a paint your own pottery place called pot a doodle do nearby which is good. If you go early in the week you can pick up your fired items before you go home at the end of the week.
