What makes you dislike your job?

Currently on my morning break and feel like running away!!!

Hoping other stories can give me a giggle.

My manager is the micromanager or all managers. We have to let him know what are plans for the day are, every task , everyday. They must be across all tasks (for no reason )
At the end of the day we must have accounted for every minute of everyday in a booking system with notes on every task.
We must notify everyone in the team chat when we make a drink, when we go to the loo etc (for no reason again - not a call centre or on a line?!)

None of us are trusted to do tasks a lot of the time he will 'do them with us' to help and it's just us sitting there watching them complete it (as simple as a stationary order) but we are all perfectly competent!

Constant criticism and judgement. Some things I can't say as very specific and outing (doubt anyone would have been told these things as quite shocking)

Just want to scream Angry

Why do you dislike your job? Is it worse?!

Lazy colleagues. Culture of bullying. Everything is very much about keeping up appearance, above patient care, so you can raise things until you're blue in the face but management level and above don't give a shit as long as the company still looks good.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 02/09/2021 06:55

The red tape constantly. Public sector here. We're taking months to get a PC fixed.
The constant training on how to talk nicely to people. Which has left staff thinking nobody higher up can ask them anything or say anything they don't fancy doing.
The lack of recognition for hard work. I could scream at times. Higher band staff coast, lower bands work really hard to get to a higher band but can't as there is no progression route unless you want a lengthy battle involving the unions and HR.

Getting shat on from above and below because your in the middle.

Superfoodie123 · 02/09/2021 06:58

Lazy manager who takes no responsibility and passes anything she can't handle down. Pointless meetings with people who have nothing to do with their time when you're really busy. Being underpaid and paid less than colleagues youre working with daily and have the same if not more responsibilities as. Fake conversation and niceties, a little is fine but my boss takes up 15 mins of a call talking about her weekend, let's just get on with it please.

burritofan · 02/09/2021 07:10

@JustGiveMeGin You've encapsulated my exact work feelings! Whenever I have new life fantasies, predicated on retraining or a new job or going self-employed or whatever, the key theme is that not a lot of work is involved. So many things I’d rather be doing! Even with things I LIKE, it still gets in the way of real life.

Things I hate in my current job: the sincerity. Logging our work to the minute. Micromanagement. Endless new initiatives that go nowhere. Not-great money. An expectation that we live breathe sleep the mission 24/7 when I want to log off at 5pm and do something entirely different.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 02/09/2021 07:37

I have 2 colleagues who seem to think they're the manager. Last week one of them was on leave and rang my manager to tell him to ring me and tell me to do a certain piece of work. Something that was unimportant compared to other things and I'd told him multiple times I didn't have time to do.
I know my own caseload thanks and it pisses me off that he's less senior than I am yet happily orders me around. It was all about stats - do an easy piece of work to get the stats at the expense of actually important things that are more time dependent.

TravellingSpoon · 02/09/2021 07:50

Lack of decent staff so they will accept anyone who applies, even if they are not competent. The vaccine cut-off for care homes will make this worse in November. Lazy staff that management do nothing about which affects the quality of care for our service users. I want to cry for myself and the other decent staff who care about the job, rather than those lazy individuals who just come in and do the minimum work they can possibly do (including falling asleep!).

I have a new job offer and I am in two minds whether to take it. the progression opportunities are much less, but the stress levels will be much much less too. I want a job I can go in, do, and come home. Not one that keeps me awake at night worrying.

GoodnightGrandma · 02/09/2021 07:52

Management - we know how to do the job, and how to get the maximum out of it. But bloody management change things round for changes sake, and now figures are down and they’re blaming Covid. It’s not Covid, it’s management !

Palsy · 02/09/2021 07:58

I have realised that no matter what job I do I won't be 'fulfilled' because my fulfillment doesn't come from working.

Oh god, a million times this.

I've had lots of different jobs. Nice, professional, well paid jobs. Have hated every one, eventually. Even the really good ones - the ones other people would dream of getting.

It's the compulsory, inflexible nature of work that gets me down. I bitterly resent having to sell my life in daily instalments Sad

SpnBaby1967 · 02/09/2021 08:07

I love my job but just managing customers expectations is really hard. They genuinely seem surprised that I wont just evict their neighbour because they smell cannabis a) because I cant just evict anyone, only a court can give an eviction order and b) it's hard to admit "smells" as evidence into court.

Getting other agencies to help us is soooooo frustrating and winds me up. I know they're super busy too, but help me now and prevent the problems escalating to where they now cause bigger issues.

Also, senior management. She came from a totally different area of the business and just cant seem to grasp the very unique aspect of my job. We spend 8 hours a day every day dealing with people experiencing what is, to them, one of the worst experiences in their lives. They are usually angry, frustrated and upset. We are up against a legal system which doesnt put the victim first (dispute what the government would have you believe) so they blame us. I dont mind this, I understand this but then she moans that we arent logging enough customer compliments compared to other departments Hmm. She doesnt understand why we are buckling under the pressure of 3 times the number of cases than we should have. We invite her to sit with us, see what a daily case management situation is like but she just shuts us down. We should have 20 cases each over 20 staff members we have 60+ cases each over 9 staff members and they're still coming in thick and fast. This week alone I have had 11 new cases. We drop the ball, there is a very real possibility that someone could die or be seriously abused. The stress of that responsibility is overwhelming and we need more staff. Nope, to her we need to just stop moaning Angry

......and breathe 😆 I genuinely do love my job. Its unique and when it goes right its incredibly rewarding.

Simonthecatsservant · 02/09/2021 08:26

I’m a cleaner and I LOVE my job and I’m flipping good at it.
However the amount of women ( sorry but it does seem to be women. Don’t lynch me) that talk to me like I’m stupid is unreal. Then the ones that won’t talk to me or acknowledge my existence.
The petty “blame” I have to answer to is unreal.
Eg posh new water fountain has water round the bottom of it means the cleaner can’t or isn’t mopping so if “I slip I will sue her.” The posh new water fountain couldn’t possibly be leaking it’s definitely the cleaner not doing her job correctly OR there is a slice of bread missing the cleaner definitely took it Confused.

Luckily my managers are fab and really back me up.
They also treat me really well and let me know I’m doing a good job so it makes the pettiness easier to deal with.

Snog · 02/09/2021 08:39

I disliked
having to wear work appropriate clothes
Needing to concentrate in a busy office with people constantly coming in and out
Way too hot in summer
Bullying manager

NewYearNewTwatName · 02/09/2021 08:40

owner/Managers literally never there. there is no one steering the ship.

forever short staffed, so everyone working to plug the gaps on top of carrying a couple of incompetent and daydreamy members of staff who also lie about what jobs they have done, which is soon discovered and adds yet more extra work to everyone else.

when a manager appears and concerns raised about incompetent staff, and other issues that management should be here to deal with. Instead of taking incompetent staff aside for a private meeting, they call a full staff meeting and then tell everyone how shit they are, and start telling us we're letting standards drop, and other shit that in the grand scheme of keeping their fucking business afloat in their absence is utterly irrelevant.

What little moral is left is literally kicked out of everyone. Then we lose more staff because of it.

having a moan about said meetings is then overheard by work shit stirrer who then reports back to management with much embellishment, cue absence managers suddenly remembering where they work and turning up and giving everyone another bollocking..........more staff leave.

I'm done I'm going with everyone else.

JustGiveMeGin · 02/09/2021 10:49

@burritofan shite isn't it? I am a relatively intelligent person (no genius by any stretch but definitely capable of holding down a 'decent' job!) I have slowly worked my way down the career ladder because I just can't be arsed with any of itBlush
I left my last 'decent' job because of the micro management, I had to go before I said/did something unprofessional....I was contacted a few months later by one of the managers that I liked asking me to come back as the micro manager couldn't do my job and they were up shits creek without a paddle!!! I refused as I couldn't trust myself not to tell the patronising cow exactly how I felt so I have stayed in my 'lesser' role.
Ideally I would be self employed but I have no ideas about what I would like to do (other than nothing Hmm) and no money behind me to start anything.
I am literally just showing up at work to pay the bills and I enjoy none of it.

Benjispruce5 · 02/09/2021 10:53

Parents ( primary school)
My pay.
Not being able to take days off out of holiday time.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/09/2021 10:55

I have two managers, they argue and fight all the time and it's really hard to concentrate over their fights. They're both always competing for who i do work for first and are highly critical.
Hours are irregular and i def don't get enough time off between working hours as them contact me at crazy hours for tasks.

My coworker is fine but does part time hours as he has other commitments.

I'd ask for a pay rise but they can't afford it without tapping their parents for cash.

Twins are so hard work! Hopefully it'll get better once they're 2.... ,,🙄😁😭

Benjispruce5 · 02/09/2021 10:57

To add to that:
Head Teacher makes rules. Staff follow them. Parent complains. Staff uphold rules. Parent complains to Head Teacher who backs down for fear of losing pupils(funding lost) and repeat.

anon12345678901 · 02/09/2021 10:57

I have two managers, one is lovely, the other is really strange at times! He was lovely when I needed emergency time off for hospital, but then when it came to us in the office again after 18 months, he wouldn't even say hello or goodbye to me. Barely answers my emails. Don't ever get a catch up. I just don't get it 🤷🏻‍♀️

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 02/09/2021 10:59

@123feraverto

Short staffing

Managers that don't support their team

Team not respecting roles

Patients entitled attitudes / rudeness

People not replying to messages left for them - OT, doctors , other wards etc

(I'm a mental health nurse in a medium secure unit)

I'm NHS but not front line, and the first 3 of those 100% apply to me too.

Chronic under-resourcing. Managers who won't push back when unreasonable demands are made. Managers expressing surprise when you cannot possibly do everything asked despite working well over your hours. Being unable to work to the high professional standards I would like to, because I simply don't have the capacity.

Mabelface · 02/09/2021 11:14

Talking the talk about diversity, inclusion and mental health, but not following their own policies and indeed the law.

Goldi321 · 02/09/2021 11:15

The press and public perception of my job. I’m a GP trainee in my final year before qualifying.I WANT to be seeing people face to face, I didn’t sign up to do telephone triage and work in a call centre, but what we can’t do is have everyone crammed into the waiting room like before in a pandemic.
Virtually every patient I speak to with a new cough has not booked a Covid PCR, would you like those patients sat next to your elderly grandparent coming in for dressing changes who has no choice but to come into the practice? Or the immunosuppressed patient coming in for essential bloods.
I’ve worked throughout the pandemic, in hospital at the start and now out in GP. My job is FAR more mentally taxing in the surgery, my routine days are 12 hour shifts and we don’t get any time to do all of the paperwork, check blood results, reports, audit work and on top of this training exams and portfolio.
Our patients are sicker than ever, more complex, we are having to manage things way out of our comfort zone because of hospital waiting lists. And now having to face anger at non-emergency bloods being stopped, we were told our local hospital had 2 days supply before running out recently. So now we are having to make even more difficult decisions.
So yes, when I see reports of GPs being lazy it makes me wonder why I am doing the job. I’ve never worked in a practice where GPs don’t have to work like this to stay afloat either.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 02/09/2021 11:17

I love my job but oh my God the NHS admin!!!

OnceTheyDid · 02/09/2021 11:19

Not a lot really. If pushed I'd say higher management are not supportive enough but I also like that because they just let us get on with it.

Beeinalily · 02/09/2021 16:50

@Mabelface supermarket? I think we may work for the same company.

Mabelface · 02/09/2021 18:30

@beinalily nope, an insurer who should know better! Refusal to put reasonable adjustments into place which are eminently reasonable, meaning I'm not fit for work and am now off sick. Amongst other things like gdpr employee information breaches.
