School break time snack ideas

ShellfishLove · 31/08/2021 15:56

Somehow I have managed to dodge the need to send any snacks to school, but my 7 year old starts a new school next week and they need to bring one in. I’d love any suggestions of things you send in which are healthy and filling (she does not like malt loaf or cheese).

Usually only fruit allowed at most schools. Where will they be eating them? If in the playground then no packaging or tubs or they will have to walk round with them all break.

Banana?

234Pepperplant · 31/08/2021 16:08

I’d send in a banana on day 1 and then see what other people are doing and what the parameters are - our school specifically says only fresh/dried fruit or veg allowed for snack. And it’s eaten on the playground in break time so children don’t want anything “fussy” like you might have at a sit down snack time in eyfs.

ShellfishLove · 31/08/2021 17:31

Ok thanks, both. Will definitely go with a banana first day, and great shout on not sending anything in that’s in Tupperware!

Banana or apple?
Small bag of grapes

Russell19 · 31/08/2021 17:38

Our school is fruit only but ideas are pre buttered toast in foil (possibly add peanut butter if your school isn't nut free), fruit kebab sticks in foil too, yoghurt drinks, dried raisins boxes, yoghurt coated raisins, pan au chocolate pre packaged, rice cakes or yoghurt topped rice cakes (which are my absolute favourite!)

TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 17:44

I send ds in with either fruit or half a marmite sandwich.
In theory the school is a ‘healthy school’ but there are kids who bring packets of crisps and chocolate bars to school for break and so it’s not that ‘healthy’ in reality Grin

geminiflanagan · 31/08/2021 17:54

Mine has an apple everyday. Granola bar if we run out before end of week!

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 31/08/2021 18:36

Innocent smoothie cartons here

TheWordsmithsApprentice · 31/08/2021 19:18

Everyone in our school takes something packaged like a cereal bar or small box with e.g. dippy cheese and mini carrots, mini peppers and cheese or salami, apple or whatever fruit and crackers. Plus a water bottle.

Only allowed fruit or veg in our school.

So i send in grapes; apple slices; carrot sticks and occasionally* those fruit leather bear things.

*pretty much every day.

Please don’t send fruit kebab sticks! Imagine the incidents that could happen on the playground.
Soontobe60 · 31/08/2021 19:29

I know this might sound radical, but what about sending in a banana, whole apple, carrot or tangerine?

Fishocado · 31/08/2021 19:32

Popcorn (plain)
Fruit
Veg Sticks
Cheese and crackers
Jerky
Protein balls

Can I just ask (yes I know, there always has to be one, and today I am that one) please do not send in peanut butter even if the school isn't nut free. My DS1 is sevrely allergic to the point that if someone had peanut buetter on toast at breakfast at home then touched a door handle he could go into anaphylaxis. I live in a fairly acure state of anxiety quite alot of the time.

There are just so many other options out there.

3GreenPullups · 31/08/2021 19:32

whole lot of typos there but hopefully you know what I mean.

Cannes12 · 31/08/2021 19:33

All schools are nut free

Fishocado · 31/08/2021 19:37

@Cannes12 Really? I did not know that, do you have link to this please?

dementedpixie · 31/08/2021 19:37

All schools are nut free
No they aren't, especially secondary schools
Backonceagainwiththe · 31/08/2021 19:49

Most people = apple banana chewy bar, winder/yoyobear or penguin.

I don't mean to be rude but there's no school in the UK who would allow a fruit kebab or a peanut butter sandwich!
No one is checking or comparing. Honestly.

Last year I sent in a packet of dried seaweed (itsu) that we had and was ridiculed by my dc for months. (In my defensce they had eaten and enjoyed a packet once). It caused much amusement to their friends.

I can tell you for definite they're not. I work in one. We are not a nut free school
