Best excuse to give to attend job interview?

Hi everyone, I have a job interview next week but I don't know what the best excuse to give my current work is going to be.

I'm miserable at work, getting some support from the doctor to get through it. My employers are also under close watch from health & safety as they shunned the risk assessment recommendations & over half the office has covid now.

Anyway, I was planning to pull a sickie as I haven't been off sick for over a year. But then last week I actually did get sick and had to take 2 days off. I can't even say I have a GP appointment as they aren't face to face yet either.

I hate lying but this job is a great opportunity and I need to get out of there. What would be a good reason or excuse?

That wouldn't be your proof to give out?

Just have a house emergency on the morning of.

Why can’t you say you’re going for a job interview? You are allowed to do that.

MargaretMorris · 02/09/2021 00:36

The bosses are toxic @CoffeeTopUp. Just because I am allowed doesn't mean I should tell them necessarily.

I think once the cat is out the bag, if I don't get the job that might be hard going for me.

Emergency dentist appointment, lost a filling/broke tooth the night before and they are fitting you in at the time of your interview. Remember to take in soup for lunch as you can't eat properly! And the next day for the full effect!

Or a house emergency but not so good for getting the afternoon off. Unless you prearrange someone to "emergency " call you, and say its your downstairs neighbour and water is coming through the ceiling?? Maybe not if you live in a house but you get the idea.

I get how you feel but you must put yourself first and prioritise getting a new job . Good luck!

Re your(genuine) illness a short time ago I would just say that your illness has "raised an issue" and you now have an appointment on xxx. Let the listener assume that your illness and the further appointment are connected.

This is not untrue. Your genuine illness has made it difficult for you to "pull a sickie" so this is the issue for which you have now cause to make an appointment. I doubt if anyone will ask for further details but you can aways say you will only discuss medical matters with the company MOH.
