Bloody taxman...........

Before I start we are very aware that we are very lucky.

DH turned 65 at the beginning of this month, his FS pension starts on the 1st of September, he is working for another year on full salary and can then collect his state pension which will leave us in an OK position and we are aware of how lucky we are.

We knew we would be taxed to death for the next year and a half, but did the tax man really need to send through his new tax code, which understandably is vicious..... before he had the pleasure of one double bubble payday.

We had a family meeting last night and agreed amongst us which extra charities we are taking on whilst we are on double bubble.

It would have been nicer for the taxman's letter to arrive next week.Confused

I give up, it was a light hearted comment, the money is due to land tomorrow, if the letter had landed on Thursday we would have thought, yip makes sense.

But just pissed us off a tad that the letter didn't land 48 hours later.

Happy to pay tax from day one, always knew it would be a savage year, just wished the letters had arrived in a different order.

It is really not difficult.

OP, I apologise. I clearly have misunderstood (though I'm still not sure I understand).
Still, time to move on. Enjoy the doubt bubble whilst it lasts.

I am 65 and I won't get my state pension until I am 66. How has your DH managed to get his now?

My Dad worked 6 months after his retirement date. It wasn't worth it. He
ended up paying 50% tax.

@endofthelinefinally

He will get it next year at 66, if we take his final salary and his state our numbers kind of stack up. We took the FS this year, as the extra despite being heavily taxed can go into slush/emergency funds for replacement boilers, washing machines, etc

Oh, just re-read the thread and realised FS, means final salary. I think most people who get a salary related pension end up paying a big chunk of their state pension back in tax. It is just the way it goes.

I'm still not sure why it's frustrating? Amusing? that the letter arrived before pay day but I'm glad this was not an "i have to pay tax" complaint. I think you got a different response that you expected OP as there was some confusion about aspect of the timing was an issue for you.

The employer might have not received the new code in time, bearing in mind they might run wages earlier to get them done in good time.

But I guess you know now.

And the tax would only end up being due and payable anyway, but you know that
