Decorating a room for 9yo boy

We've just moved house and I need some inspiration for my sons room, he's really excited to have it decorated and we've agreed he can have wallpaper. The problem is finding a nice wallpaper for him. DD (7yo) picked a gorgeous floral wallpaper for her room which will still work as she gets older.

When we were looking for ideas we found there was a real lack of options for boys, even boys who don't mind something a bit gender non conforming. There were rolls and rolls of pinks and unicorns and flowers, or it was all aimed very much at decorating nurseries (pastel grey cartoon animals and stars/rainbows featured a lot). He ended up picking the only wallpaper that didn't fit into either of those categories- which was ok, but nothing special. It was a Marvel one and I'm a bit of a comic fan but this one was disappointing. I think he'll want it changing once he gets a little older, and ideally I'd like it to last more than a handful of years before he gets fed up.

So has anyone got any ideas where I can look for wallpaper for him? He's always been into bright colours, so kind of want to avoid some of the dark/monochrome stuff you see aimed at boys.

I'd paint, not put wallpaper. Then get nice frames for marvel posters or other artwork, themed bedding etc. Much cheaper and easier to change furnishings than wallpaper. And what they like at 9 they might not like even at 10 - aka my ds!

Yes agree with pp, I'd also paint and use prints to add something else which can be changed more easily.

Totally sensible suggestion, that makes much more sense than wallpapering, however he's got his heart set on wallpaper 🙈

And yeah, I'm concerned he's going to change his preferences rapidly. Especially as he starts a new school next week, so may find different friends mean student things are "cool". It's an odd age isn't it? They are still kids, but they are growing up so damn fast!

How about paint and then explore some very cool wall stickers? This will give the illusion of wall paper but you can replace when they date.

You can get wallpapers that are like optical illusions.

Or a world map one?

Or compromise on one feature wall?

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 31/08/2021 18:00

How about one feature wall of a brick effect wall paper?
This could be a "cool" background for posters, shelves etc

lots of options out there

We used grey brick wallpaper with my ds room he absolutely loves it. We did the brick wallpaper on one wall and painted the rest of the walls white. We also did grey laminate too. It's something that could grow with him aswell.

My ds, aged 10 wanted pale blue walls with car logos stencilled on.

It worked quite well.

The range have some potential options. We found some nice space themed ones there. They have some nice murals too.

MrsPerfect12 · 31/08/2021 20:07

What about either of these?
Skate boards as shelves with the graffiti paper would be cool.
